21st Century 101, Tuesday Second Period

"Let's talk about cell phones," Steve announced today. "By now you have probably been introduced to the concept, if not, a telephone is a device that allows you to communicate instantaneously with people over long distances, and they've been around for over a hundred years, so some of you are probably already familiar, while the cell phone is a wireless version you can carry with you anywhere. They're a relatively new invention, only really becoming widespread around the turn of the century. Most have additional features, such as a camera and the ability to connect to the internet, and some go even further.

After giving a short intro to how to use a cell phone for calling and texting, and touching briefly on the idea of 'apps,' Steve said, "Now, there are a lot of different models of cell phones, but they really break down into a few categories." He held up an example of each as he spoke, from a fairly wide array laid out on a table near the front of the classroom. "Flip-type phones are typically the most basic type, with a numeric keyboard with the letters on the keys in a common configuration. Some phones come with a small alphabetic keyboard for typing and texting. And some phones have a touchscreen that can be configured in a lot of different ways. The ones with the touchscreen are typically where you'll find what's known as 'smart phones,' the ones that can download 'apps' and whatnot."

Steve then proceeded to handwavily explain the pros and cons of contracts vs. prepaid services, and to emphasize the importance of reading the manual when one first bought a phone, as he handed out a handwavey packet containing all the basic information one might need when first considering buying a phone.

"Now, for discussion, let's talk about one way the cell phone improves life and one drawback of the cell phone. If you already have a cell phone, or if you have some alternate communication device that works the same way, great. I encourage you, for the rest of class or during the week, to poke around on it and see if you can discover any functions you didn't know about before. If you don't have a phone, or if you're unhappy with your current model, you can come up here and poke around with these display models, and see if you can find one that works for you."

"Can I say that being available to communicate all the time is both a pro *and* a con?" Ulrik mused thoughtfully.

"The portable bit's nice," Ace offered. "Almost as good as some of the communicators the aliens I've met had. But it sounds like you've got to give a chuckload of personal info out and have a steady supply of cash for one of those plans."

Which in no way meant that she didn't want to get her hands on a smartphone now, thank you very much, because wha-heeey, technology.

With lasers. His cellphone had lasers, Steve.

And now he was frowning at the selection. He could totally build his classmates better phones. Phones that could crash Skynet better.
