Kicking Ass, Teamwork Style (Wednesday, Period 3/Week 2)

So there were several boxes of baked goods outside the Danger Shop today; you could chalk it up to Kennedy feeling generous, or maybe she'd had a really busy patrol last night. Or both could be true. Probably were.

Inside, the Danger Shop was set up like a park or a very large yard: a sizeable treehouse nestled among the branches of a sturdy-looking oak, fifty yards or so away from a fort made of sandbags and tarps. The fort was well stocked with Nerf weapons, buckets of ping-pong balls, and other moddable implements of harmless toy warfare, and anyone venturing into the treehouse would find the same. Each base (because that was obviously what they were) had a brightly-colored bandanna serving as a flag: the fort's green one was tied to a stick planted in the dirt behind the sandbag wall, and the treehouse's red one was visible through one window.

"Okay," Kennedy-- pacing back and forth along the top of one sandbag-fort wall-- said once the class had assembled. "Here's the thing about teamwork: there's all these motivational posters and things about it, but the fact is? You're not all gonna get along all the time. It happens. Stuff isn't going right, there's all this stress, maybe you haven't had any time to plan or get to know each other before you got thrown into the middle of everything. Odds are good you're gonna end up getting up in each other's faces a few times."

Her tone was light, but her expression bordered on the serious. "That? Not good. And I'm not gonna say you can prevent it, but you gotta be prepared for it. I wasn't, the first time, and things got really messy." Yeah, that was an understatement. "So here's a question for you. How's it gone down for you, if you've been in that kind of situation before, with the team friction? How do you think you'd handle it if you had to do it again? And if this is all just theory for you right now, how do you think you'd handle it?"

She waved a hand. "Not a discussion question. Just something to think about while you guys split up into teams and play Capture the Flag. Count off, one-two-one-two, and then you've got ten minutes to figure out who can do what to help your team out. Do not go out there and deliberately try to hurt each other, on the other team or yours, got it? Okay, get moving."

Topher eyed the rest of his group. Oh god, they just had to be girls who could kick his ass, didn't they?

"I wanna be defense," he said immediately.

UGH. Why did she have to be stuck in a group with Topher? SO UNFAIR.

"I can, um, fly over and drop stuff on them, I guess?" she said, eyeing the treehouse.

"I do not know this game," Surreal stated, tapping her fingers against her leg as she stared at the treehouse. "I could get the 'flag' easily enough with Craft, but I'd rather not use it for a game."

Well, she wasn't going to be allowed to blow anything up in this scenario, so that was Ace's top talent right out, but she did have others.

Like the ability to grin really widely when she discovered the provided weapons included a nerf slingshot (http://www.austinkayak.com/products/6583/Zing-Zing-Shot.html).

"If we need somebody to lay down cover," she said, snapping the rubber band on the unloaded sling, "I'm there."

[identity profile] harpy-daughter.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"So the goal is to hit the other team, and steal their flag?" Surreal hazarded, her own grin starting to widen. "How many hits does it take before someone is 'down,' or whatever the equivalent is?"

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"When I've played it before it was just one hit," Angelica said, eyeing the bucket of ping pong balls. "But maybe we should ask to find out for sure."

Re: Strategy: Team Sandbag Fort (1)

[identity profile] whateverknight.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Let's assume it's just one hit," Squall decided. "At least until we find out for sure. I'll start off on defense with Topher. Does anyone want to come up with a strategy for attacking the treehouse?"

Re: Strategy: Team Sandbag Fort (1)

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can fly over and drop the ping pong balls on them from above," Angelica offered. "While someone else comes at them from below."

"Should probably send more than one person on the ground," Richie suggested. "There's a better chance of someone getting through then."

"Unless they're special magnetic bandanas, I got nothing," Victor warned his team before squinting toward the flags. "She didn't even give me a metal flagpole to work with."

He sounded a bit disappointed, yes.

Bobby was just going to sit back and let his teammates do most of the planning. He'd offer opinions if asked, of course, but since he was a TA and not a student, he'd let them take the lead.

"I think we should split up into defense and offense," Alex said as he looked around at his all-Marvel so far teammates. "I volunteer for offense." Defense was boring, sorry, whoever got stuck with it. "Does anybody know if any of their team has any superpowers we should be looking out for?"

Re: Strategy: Team Treehouse (2)

"They have a flyer, but so do we," Victor said thoughtfully, since if you had a database in your head you might as well put it to good use. "No advantage either way, there."

He scruffed a hand through his hair. "I don't know a lot of them. And I'm good for defense or offense."

"Yeah, but they're on the ground and we're in a treehouse," Alex pointed out. "So that kind of takes away our high ground advantage a little."

Re: Strategy: Team Treehouse (2)

[identity profile] 3girls-1core.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sholeh was feeling vastly unprepared for either offense or defense. She knew the game, of course, but didn't have much in the way of skills or abilities to help.

"Is there anything I can do? I'm willing to help, I'm just not sure how."

Were there books she could read? Because she could totally do that, if they needed!

Re: Strategy: Team Treehouse (2)

[identity profile] snarkyhealer.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"You could help me keep an eye out," Shira offered.

And then she stopped to think. "So, who thinks putting up a protective shield around the treehouse would actually count as cheating? Because I can totally do that and it would keep them out... for as long as I could keep it up, anyway."

Re: Strategy: Team Treehouse (2)

[identity profile] 3girls-1core.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
"...A protective shield?" Sholeh asked. "What do you mean? Like...fashion something out of leaves and branches?"

Like they'd done in Professor Bond's class yesterday! Immediately, Sholeh reached for some branches to try to make a cover out of.

[identity profile] whitequeensfire.livejournal.com 2012-05-16 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, this was way more fun than Emma's training scenarios with giant killer robots trying to blast her.

Angelica picked up a bucket of ping pong balls and launched herself into the air. Once she was over the treehouse, she turned the bucket upside down to let the balls fall. Ping pong death from above!
