The Art of Disguise, Wednesday

Class today was greeted by a slightly different looking Holmes sitting at the desk at the front of the classroom. He was clean shaven, hair trimmed into a style that didn't look as though he fell out of bed and into a wind tunnel, and--most importantly--dressed in modern attire.

"The most simple method of disguise involves slipping around the expectations of the person looking," Holmes said once everyone had arrived. "And before you ask, no, this was not meant to fool you. I am your teacher, I am expected to be at the front of the class after all. It is merely a demonstration of how easily your perception of a person can change with only the most minor of changes."

Like bathing. And not wallowing in his apartment because he was bored.

He stood up, pacing the front of the room impatiently. "The disguise that works best is the disguise that undergoes the least amount of scrutiny. A glance and you are dismissed as unimportant is the goal you must strive for. You discussed what defines you last week, now you must alter or hide those features with only clothing and what can be found on hand."

He tapped his fingers impatiently on the desk for a moment before realizing that perhaps he should point out the materials for the task. "In the back of the room you will find a variety of clothing; a wide variety of moddable styles and colors available for your use. You may only use that and what you have on your person at this moment to attempt your disguise. I suggest you start now."

The more he listened to the lecture, the more excited Butters became. He could do this! He was already unremarkable to look at! Why, for years, for a real long time, it was like all he was was just a figure in the background...He totally got this.

=This would be so much easier if we could surface,= Zeela said, with almost audible longing.

::He did say we could only use what was on hand,:: Sholeh said, internally giggling. ::I think you two would count!::

*Do you think we could?* Zhahar asked wistfully. *Just for a few moments?*

Sholeh knew she should say no. Their safety depended on it! But her sisters sounded so...sad. She hadn't realized staying submerged all the time would be so hard on them.

::If you think it's safe...::

Peeta already felt he dressed pretty simply but he had to admit he did stick out a little among people from this era. He actually looked like he was from the 1930's. Because in the future poor people will dress like they're from the past.

Or something.

He started rifling through the clothes available and tried to put together an outfit similar to what the boys around here wore.

William could do this easily enough. Rummaging through the available clothing, he looked for a pair of jeans and a decent-looking sweater.

Lex went for layers, and things that where neither tailored or looked like they had triple figure price tags, along with a hat that covered his lack of hair.

The end result was, well...look, they didn't have hipsters in mid-nineties Metropolis.

Frank spotted a leather jacket and immediately seized it. Because duh.

The rest of the outfit just kind of followed from there.

Sholeh found clothing that looked more like what her fellow students were wearing, discarding her dress and bustle and various not-strictly-required underthings (the strictly required underthings were staying right where they were, thank you very much!). Her most distinctive feature was her hair, so she bound it tight and shoved it up under a hat she'd found.

Even after she was dressed, she kept poking at clothing, keeping her face turned away from the class. If she kept her head down enough, it was likely (probable? possible?) that no one would notice that sometimes that turned-away face bore a strong resemblance to Sholeh (stronger now with the hair tucked away), but wasn't hers.

Kenzi bundled up her hair through long practice, grabbed some (ugh) preppy clothes, put on a blonde wig, and some lightly tinted glasses. Some pink lipgloss, pastel make-up, and she was pretty much unrecognizable as herself.

Billy thought that a wig might be too much, but he managed to find some really nice clothes that were a lot different than what he'd normally wear. It was a start, at least.

James worked some magic (not real magic) on a suit that leaned towards the threadbare end rather than fresh from the tailor, and matched it with a white dress shirt and dark tie. Overall effect? Clerk. Lawyer. Office worker. Salesman. A few accessory items such as a briefcase would complete the look.

William was here, now dressed in a sweater and a pair of jeans. At least he'd been in Fandom long enough that it no longer felt awkward to dress in modern clothing.
