Kicking Ass, Teamwork-Style, etc. (Wednesday, Period 3/Week 1)

If there was any significance to the fact that the Danger Shop looked like a backyard decked out with a makeshift archery range and training dummies, Kennedy wasn't saying. Anyway, it seemed like a nice mix of kickback and "time to do work." She was pacing back and forth on the far side of the yard by the archery target, waiting for everyone to filter in through what would be the back door.

Anyone who didn't know her might wonder what a short, lightly built girl who didn't look that much older than them knew about the workshop's subject matter, even if she did carry herself like she thought she could take anything on. Or not, if they knew better than to go by appearances.

"Hey," she said once everyone-- she was pretty sure-- had arrived. "So yeah, this is Kicking Ass, Teamwork-Style, just in case you were wondering where you were. If this is what you signed up for, you're in the right place. If not... might be useful anyway, so stick around."

She tucked her thumbs into her belt and kept pacing, looking over the students (and she was sure Vi and Rona were laughing at this concept right now) as she went on. "I'm Kennedy, Fandom class of 2011, and I'm a Vampire Slayer-- which, in case any of you guys are vampires, relax. You're safe from me. Unless you end up snacking on one of the other students, 'cause then we might have to have words."

She paused with a sheepish look on her face, having actually realized that sounded kind of intimidating, and cleared her throat before going on quickly. "So yeah, this is gonna be about working together and, you know, not getting all up in each other's faces." She was such an expert at that, right? There was probably a synchronized Scooby eyeroll happening across multiple time zones right now.

"It's not like the world has to almost end for this stuff to be useful, by the way. Even if you're not gonna go home after Fandom and do this for a living, it kinda helps to know how to work with other people in a crisis situation." (She had not come up with that part of the intro spiel. Or most of it. Willow had listened to her rattle off the first version of it and made a long color-coded list of suggestions. Miraculously, Kennedy had actually taken a couple of them.) "So anyway. I want to know a little bit about you guys, and what you're doing in this class. I know the introductions thing gets really old really fast, but I actually do want to know so I know what to cover here. Name, class, powers if you have 'em and are cool talking about that, something you're good at that would be useful in a fight or a crisis, anything you might want to cover the next few weeks."

Kennedy waited a moment before adding, "Oh, and if you do have powers, don't rub it in for everyone who doesn't, yeah?"

Bobby gave a little wave. "I'm Bobby Drake. Some of you might know me already, but for those who don't... I just graduated a couple weeks ago, so I'm one of your TAs for this session." He wasn't going to talk about his powers, and was kind of ridiculously grateful that Kennedy had thought to mention it was okay to not want to mention that sort of thing. "Something useful about me in a crisis is that- I don't really need a big detailed explanation if you need me to do something. Just point me wherever and I'll get it done."

"Kate, now a senior. I have some magic." See, not rubbing it in Kennedy. So much glossed over right there.

She hesitated just a moment before she added, "And a sword that eats vampires." That was pretty useful in a fight, and more importantly was good with it. It also didn't give away too much of exactly what she could do.

Seriously, Bobby Drake? Victor knew the novelty of seeing different versions of famous people from home would wear off eventually, but it hadn't yet.

"Hey, I'm Victor," he said. "I guess I'm a junior. I have electromagnetic powers. I'm good in a crisis because ... I think pretty fast, I'm durable, and I'm good at figuring out any weapons the other side might have."

Topher did not belong in this class at all. Like at all. He was asthmatic and also kind of useless in a fight. Just ask Billy or Ben from that one time.

"Uh, hey," he said. "Topher Brink. Junior, I guess. No powers, but I'm kinda a genius, so that's a thing?"

Karolina had purposefully held back on introducing herself for a while, just to see what other were saying. Since people were actually saying they had powers, it seemed like it was okay for her to share, too.

Even if she wouldn't go into why she had hers.

"Hi, I'm Karolina," she said, with a little wave. "I guess I'm a junior? And uh, I can fly. And make shields and projectiles." She left that vague half on purpose, too. "And um... I guess I'm good at calming people down."

Well, Sia thought, her reasons for trying to slip in under the radar at this school just in case had been pretty much shot once she turned out to be related to half the people she'd met so far, so she might as well be truthful.

"Marasiah Fel, sophomore. I'm not a Jedi-" Just getting that out there now to prevent having conversations about it later, since most everyone seemed to know what one was. "-but I have the same powers as one, and I have good leadership skills."

"I'm Sholeh Zeela a Zhahar, I'm a sophomore, and I don't have any powers at all," Sholeh said softly. She couldn't even claim genius the way the other boy could; she just read a lot and asked a ton of questions. "I'm...not really sure I have anything that would be useful."

"I'm Darcy Lewis, and I'm going to be a senior. I know what Facebook is and I've got a taser that I can use in an emergency." Darcy said with a grin. Yes, she considered knowing Facebook a superpower. "I'd like to be able to protect myself without having to get close enough to crazy people to taze them."

By the time the list of "oh and I'm a minor Greek deity" and "I can fly, does that count?" powers had been rattled off, Ace's eyes were about three times as wide as when she stepped into the room and twice as wide as she'd like them to be. She didn't mind looking impressed, because she was; intimidated, though, was unacceptable.

"I'm Ace. I blow things up." So there.

Note that she didn't say how.

Well, this class looked interesting.

"Angelica Jones," Angel said. "I'll be a junior in the fall, and, um, I can control microwave radiation." It was getting a little easier to be open about being a mutant. "I'm still learning how to control my powers but I can fly and set things on fire."

And blow up schools.
