Is Love a Tender Thing? Tuesday, 1st Period (Week 1)

Romeo seemed at ease as he watched the students file in. Nostalgic, even. After all, it was a classroom much like this one -- perhaps even the same as this one -- in which he'd met his love.

The idea he could be helping the same magic happen was enough to lighten his romantic heart, weighed down under the burden of the last several weeks in Tokyo as it was.

"Hello," he began, once everyone was seated and seemed to be about as quiet as they would get. "My name is Romeo Montague, and I graduated from Fandom in 2009. I might answer the question in the course title first. No, love is not tender: Love is rude, and rough, and plays with us like pawns on a chess board. If that were all you came to hear, you might leave now and save my breath. "

"If you are staying, though -- and I hope you would -- we have far more to say."

"Such as that for all my partner-in-crime here might have you think, love is not the only topic of this course," Yurika quipped, her utter exhaustion over the events of the past few weeks hidden expertly behind her persona. "You can call me 'Miss Dojima,' or just 'Dojima.'"

"But don't count out lust, UST, innuendo, and hook-ups when you're looking for companionship. It doesn't need to be messy or complicated, until it is."

"And the problem is that there's no map that shows where it will become messy or complicated," Romeo sighed. "Neither of us expected more than a pleasant evening at a dance when we met, and here it is, five years later. You cannot always control your heart. The most you can do is be prepared, and at least try to think before you jump into anything." Not that Romeo was any good at that, but he knew enough to parrot the advice by now.

Yurika added, "If you're already sexually active, you've heard this before and you'll hear it again. Carry condoms. Get checked at the clinic. Doesn't matter if you like kissing boys, girls, anthropomorphic personifications, shape-shifters, whatever; Fandom throws us curveballs when we least expect it. Whatever type of relationship you favor, there's some things - while completely unromantic - are important to your health and that of the object of your affection. Do everyone a favor, and be good to yourself."

"We'll say far more in the next two months, but that is the root of it," Romeo said, almost wishing Yurika was a little less practical. "And now it is your turn. First weeks are for introductions; tell us your name, grade, and the story of the first time you met someone you loved. If you've not loved, someone you cared for, even if it was not requited. If you've neither loved nor liked --"

And there he looked to Yurika, out of ideas.

"Let's hear about your favorite hook-up! Keep it PG-13, though, 'cause it's class," she offered cheerfully. "Or your favorite pick-up line. Or the worst pick-up line you've ever heard. There's some terrible ones out there."

Yeah, okay, so Sparkle didn't have any great 'love of his life' scenarios to share with the class. There was somebody he was interested in, kind of, as a crush, but his experience with love in any meaningful way? Nil.

He was actually looking kind of thoughtful as the two instructors gave their lecture.

Rapunzel was actually taking notes. Mostly about things she would look up later. Like 'condoms'. She hadn't run into those on the island yet, but they sounded important.

Sholeh was kind of sliding down in her chair again. She hadn't had any of those feelings. Not really for anyone back home and no one had had them for her, either.

Zhahar was the pretty one and Zeela was the daring one and Sholeh...well, Sholeh liked books.

And now being here, Sholeh still didn't have a chance. Because falling for a one-face carried terrible consequences.

... Wait.

Thomasina was maybe staring a little; this... wasn't at all what she'd expected when she'd seen the class listed on her schedule. She had realised that the modern era was much more progressive than what she was used to, but this was still something she'd never expected to hear discussed so openly.

Lucrezia took hesitant notes, wondering how much of her love for Paolo she could reveal without divulging other things she would not care to discuss. Such as her marriage, for one.

"Hey," Frank said, standing up and offering a little wave. "I'm Frank Abagnale, I'm a freshman, and I... don't think I've really loved anyone yet who wasn't related to me?" He grinned. "But, uh, there was a girl in my French class last year I didn't mind. Like at all."

"Sparkle," said the spike-haired boy with that look in his eye again. After the cat telling him that his name and his face were stupid in class yesterday, he was about ready to pummel anyone who so much as snickered at his introduction today. "I'm in grade ten, which I guess is like sophomore out here or something? And I haven't ever really loved anyone, not really."

And telling the classmates about his crush back home was not an option. No way.

"Ah," Romeo nodded. He doubted how long anyone would last without being in love, but it was not his to badger students about it. "Some would call you lucky. Could you give us a bad pick-up line you know, even if you'd never use it?"

Rapunzel actually stood up to introduce herself. "My name is Rapunzel," she said with a smile that declared she wanted everyone to be her friend.

"And I actually can't remember the first time I met my mother, but she's someone I love?" She had the odd feeling that that wasn't quite what the question was, but she didn't entirely understand all the distinctions she kept seeing on TV and movies and stuff. There was something, though. That much she knew.

Thus the hesitance.

"I'm George Drayton and I'm a sophomore." Or so he was told. They used a completely different way of measuring school years in Adrianglia. "I don't have a favorite pick up line, but a particular tortured, brooding persona, which I find works very well."

"I'm Atton, I'm a junior," Atton said. Those two were truthful statements; they were about to be the only ones rolling out of his mouth right here and now.

"I... met... a girl or two back home when I was a kid," he said. "Well, one girl. Childhood sweethearts, you know? ... Actually, she didn't for the longest time. Her parents sent her off to some off-planet school before it went anywhere."

"I'm Stacey, and I'm a sophomore now," she said. "I don't think I've ever really been in love, but..."

And then there was a really long pause.

"Can I think about this for a while? I have a lot of stories to wade through."

Dating ho.

"I'm Sholeh Zeela a Zhahar," Sholeh said when it was her turn, blushing already. "I'm fifteen and a sophomore, and I've never fallen for someone. Or even really liked them in that way--not enough to rub skins or practice kissing or anything like that. And I'm not sure what a pick-up line is..."

"Uh." Give her a moment; she was pre-Victorian. "My name is Thomasina Coverly, I am seventeen years of age, and by this system I am a 'junior.'"

Blushing, she added, "I... have been in love, yes, with my tutor Septimus. Since I was twelve."

Septimus, grown hoary without her, then lost to the ages.

When it came to her turn, Lucrezia stood, her hands clasped in front of her.

"My name is Lucrezia Borgia," she said, "and I shall be a junior this fall. And my story ..."

She could lie. But it would be nice to tell their story, here in this class. And so instead, she would tread very carefully.

"He was a stable-boy, at the Lord Sforza's estate," she said. "Paolo held the reins of my horse as I dismounted, and I noticed he was the most beautiful person I had ever seen. Thereafter, I found excuses to be near the horses. He took me out to ride into the woods one day. I saw his reflection in the clear spring water, and I thought that if he were Narcissus, that I would quite happily pine, as Echo. I tried to kiss his reflection, and then from his lips, I learned sweetness."

It left out a great deal; what he had been willing to risk to save her from a cruel husband, and the torrid affair that had followed. But such things were private, and unwise to share with a larger audience.

"Hey. My name's Hanna Marin. I'm seventeen and I'll be a senior," Hanna said when it was her turn. "There's this guy back home...he's the first person I was ever really in love with. We were snarky to each other at first."

She smiled, thinking about Caleb. "I think that was the first clue something was there."

Romeo was scribbling a few notes as the students spoke. He was curious to hear what they'd say; teaching was completely new.
