When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

'Point. But I'm a ghost, honest.'

And she was not creepy, thank you.

"You're not being very welcoming," Thelma chastised, but only verbally.

"Okay, you're a ghost."

Who went to high school. Silly ghost.

"I'm just a guy. Regular guy. Not an alien, or a mutant, or anything exciting. But we have all those here. And a talking pink pony. But maybe that seems less weird when you're a ghost."

'I was ritually sacrificed to a fallen angel. Weird is very relative.'

She was going to save that particular sentence for more conversations today, she imagined she would need it.

That was different.

"That sucks," Richie said finally, unable to come up with a better response. "Sorry."

'It happens.' Understatement of the year, Thelma. 'So what does having a new big brother mean?' she added, wondering about that whole arrangment.

"I am, thankfully, completely impossible to 'noogie' or any of that," she remarked.

Better not say that where Richie can see it, Thelma, or he'll hunt down someone who can touch ghosts just to make it happen.

"Uh, basically I'm here to answer questions. Show you the ropes. Let you know about the gremlins and the zombies and the time the universe almost ended and a bunch of people and stuff blinked out of existence for a while. Stuff like that. And the creepy dolls. The usual."

'So not that much different than my old school.'

"At least, not that different in the last year or so. It was normal, once," Thelma said. She was rather used to talking to herself.

"Not so big an adjustment for you then," Richie said. "Your last place was really this weird? I didn't think anywhere was this weird."

'It's blown up, now.' Thelma wrote. 'So this place is probably the weirdest.'

"But we'll see just how weird it is," she said.

"I think the school got blown up at graduation once," Richie said. "So you'll feel right at home. So, uh, anything I can help with?"

'Know any other ghosts?] came Thelma's written reply. 'Witches, maybe?'

Hey, knowing who might see her would help.

"I know there's witches around," Richie said. "But I don't know about any other ghosts. But maybe they just haven't been floating around writing at me so I never knew they were here?"
