Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Very well," Lucrezia laughed. She was going to take that as a challenge, and do her best to meet it. "I am from five centuries in the past; my father was Pope Alexander Sextus, and I am his illegitimate daughter, raised in the Holy See. One weekend, my body was transformed into that of a man. Another, I was myself, but a quite melodramatic version who kept attempting to marry and commit dark acts upon various men. And another weekend, I found myself with red hair and no scruples whatsoever, and a very poor sense of fashion."

Debbie had been quite thoroughly gauche.

"This is not to count when Nothing Itself attempted to swallow the island whole, or when the school board impressed uniforms upon us, and we had to fake normalcy for the week. Have I begun to disturb you yet, or should I keep trying?"

"There were uniforms?" Frank asked, perking up. "Any chance I could get one of those?"

Frank had a Thing about uniforms.

"You wouldn't want them," she shuddered. "They were horrid. Plaid and the itchiest material imaginable. It was as though they were designed to be unattractive on every possible body known to man."

"...oh," Frank said, wrinkling his nose. "I'll stick to this, then."

His old school uniform. What, he wanted to look spiffy.

"And I, to this," Lucrezia said, gesturing to her gown. If one had dresses this fine, one ought to wear them, after all. "To each his own. Should you change your mind, there is a clothing store in town. There are many shops, in fact, and they were even able to change my ducats to dollars. They should be able to do the same with whatever money you are carrying. Oh, that ought to be our next point. What land are you from?"

"New York," Frank reported proudly. "It's not far from here. A few hours on a plane -- well, you're super old so you probably haven't been on a plane -- it's -- do you know miles?"

Lucrezia raised an eyebrow. "One never ought to intimate that a lady is old," she said, teasingly. "Where is your history? Mille passuum, a thousand paces. That which you call a mile was once known as the Roman mile, from the Holy Roman Empire."

An epoch before her own; an empire which her father was doing his very best to re-create.

"I have heard of this New York, though I have never been there," she said. "I understand it is on this vast continent, is it not? So you are not nearly so displaced in time nor space as some. You have heard of Maryland before your voyage, one presumes."

"Yeah, I have," Frank confirmed. "Not so much in 1500s Rome? Wait, I know the answer to that, never mind." Good Frank. Good dork. "So it could be worse than fifty years and a couple hundred miles, is what you're saying."

"Not at all," she allowed, granting him a light smile. "I was only determining what I ought to be explaining. I should inform you, I've never tried to be a big sibling before, so I might be failing utterly. That is, unless one counts my younger brother Joffre, back home, but he hardly needed lessons on portals."

"See, you've got the leg up on me there," Frank admitted. "I'm an only child, so being someone's little brother is kind of new. But I'm okay with skipping the going-in-your-room-to-annoy-you-while-you-have-company phase if you are."

"Quite happy to omit that," she laughed. "Though I shall still worry and fuss over your general welfare, and perhaps inquire as to your romantic prospects. Such nosiness is expected of family."

"Deal," Frank said, extending a hand. "And in return, I can... do the same for you? Does that kind of thing happen in reverse?"

"Of course it does," she said easily, taking his hand and bowing. "I am also the younger sister to two brothers, and I meddle more in their affairs than in Joffre's. Promise me you shan't go breaking the hearts of any nuns, and you will be faring better than Cesare."

"No nuns," Frank promised. "Got it."

Stewardesses and hookers, on the other hand... well. They would have to wait three more years.

And just because the situation seemed to call for it, he was going to go ahead and complement that bow of hers with an attempt at a hand-kiss. Because he had the icon for it he was a gentleman. Or something.
