When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I promise I'm not joking," Toby assured him. "The time travel's not even the weirdest thing about this place. I think that honour would have to go to Pinkie Pie."

It was probably really sad that Peeta didn't even blink at the name Pinkie Pie. He came from a place where Gloss was an actual name. "This isn't a joke, right?"

"I swear it," Toby said, with a nod. "Well- if you happen to meet my girlfriend, I wouldn't believe everything she says," he confided. "She enjoys messing with people."

"Duly noted," Peeta said with a nod. "Is there anything, um, life threatening strange I should know about?"

Toby couldn't recall ever having been asked if anything about Fandom was 'life threatening', which had him wondering just what sort of future Peeta came from.

"Not generally," he said. "I mean, from time to time there've been- invasions, I guess. But nobody's died or anything." Been permanently scarred or otherwise altered due to creepy eldritch horrors, sure, but nobody had died. "And there's gremlins. I've never actually seen one, but apparently they're venomous and they bite."

"Is that the Mutt that was on the brochure?" Peeta asked.

"Mutt?" Toby echoed the unfamiliar term. "I've never heard it called that, but if you mean the creepy thing with the fangs and the claws, then yes. Apparently they're also the school mascot."

"Strange thing to have for a mascot," Peeta noted. "And Mutt is short for Muttations. Animals my government created to fight against rebels. The rebellion is over but the Mutts stuck around. So I assume any strange animal might be one."

"No offense, but wherever you come from sounds like pretty much the opposite of fun," Toby told Peeta. "There are other strange animals here but aside from the gremlins they're pretty harmless. And nobody created them, so far as I know. They just... are."

"Right, so I won't freak about strange animals," he said with a nod. "And you're not wrong about where I'm from. Getting a brochure to this place might've been the best thing that's ever happened to me."

"It has that effect on a lot of people," Toby confided. "Myself included. I was a runaway before I came here."

"I'm glad to hear that the school has helped people out," Peeta said sincerely. "Makes dealing with the weird stuff easier."
