Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"So cool," Topher said again, looking Victor over. "How do you, like, run? Can I take a look sometime? I promise I won't mess anything up."

Um.

"If I wanted to be a doctor, would you let me cut you open and look at your heart and stuff?" Victor asked, sounding a bit annoyed. "It's a biologic overlay on a nanometal core. And I don't let people lift the hood."

Topher huffed. "Fiiiiine," he conceded. "But if anything ever goes wrong and you need someone to look, I can totally step in."

No, Topher. No.

"I will keep that in mind."

And then, you know, most likely stop thinking about it, call home in a panic and get somebody he trusted to fly out to fix whatever the problem was, but it was good to have options.

"Yeah, I ... hadn't really thought about what I'd do if something happened. Isn't the school pretty safe?"

"Well, that brings me to the second point," Topher admitted. "Sometimes, uh, the multiverse almost explodes? And we get invasions of, like, mechanical spiders and these weird frog-looking things and occasionally members of the school board."

Huh.

"How big are the frogs?" Victor asked. "Like, frog-frog sized, or more like van-sized?"

The invasion part was nothing new, but an invasion of Leapfrogs kind of was.

"Somewhere in the middle," Topher said. "Like, small child size. Oh, and we get those too. Small children."

He shuddered.

"Oh, but I like kids," Victor protested. "I live with a 12-year-old and she's awesome."

"Cool!" said Topher. "Then you'll get to be her age for a weekend at some point, probably!"

Still sound awesome, Victor?

"How?" Victor asked. "I was never really that age, and even if I was, people don't grow down."

"Yeah, conservation of mass and all that," Topher agreed. "Not sure how it happens, but it does. One time I spent a weekend six years old and appointed myself my friend's assistant and helped him, uh, break some robots."

Not really the most fun weekend ever?

"First, that's really weird," Victor informed him, running a hand back through his hair. "Second ... okay, that kind of sounds like genocide to me, I'm sorry. Did you fix them after?"

"Oh, yeah, totally," Topher said hastily. "It was an accident, anyway. We were trying to upgrade them. But uh. Totally fixed now! So... yeah."

"Topher," Victor said, very seriously because this was bordering on an emergency. "If we are ever both six, or I'm unconscious or .... whatever? Please don't try to upgrade me. Even if when I'm six I think shooting gummy worms out of my thumbs sounds awesome, or something."

Of course, he was asking for a promise that might be utterly unenforceable if they were both de-aged. So.

Topher was beginning to suspect that bringing up the robot manslaughter had been a poor choice.

"...sure," he said with a serious nod and a very awkward smile. "You -- have yourself a deal there, man-friend."

Just be glad he didn't say cyborg-friend. Very, very glad.

Or amigo! Amigo would have bothered Victor even more.

"Thanks," he said, and seemed to let it go. "Okay, so -- we kind of got distracted. Basically you were saying really weird things happen here."

"Yes!" Topher agreed with a snap of his fingers. "Yes. Super weird things." He started ticking things off on his fingers, murmuring, "We covered invasions and deaging... oh!" Another finger-snap. "Sometimes you just turn into someone else. Like a whole different someone. Who... maybe has a thing about crying on street corners."

Don't you judge fake!him, Victor. Don't you do it.

"... I don't suppose you can just tell somebody you don't want to cry on street corners and it doesn't happen?"

There was always hope. Always.

Topher grimaced. "Unfortunately I'm thinking no."

Victor sighed and muttered a curse word in Spanish.

"So, basically the island is out to screw with us," he said, and scratched along his jaw. "But it's not actually a trap."

"Exactly," Topher confirmed. "And we've already had the secret cameras/reality show possibility ruled out, unless it's, like, the most meta reality show ever."

Victor shook his head. "Nah, I'd be able to sense the cameras. There's nothing like the number you'd need for a show. I think this is just ... real life."

Or something strangely like it. Though the whole topic reminded him of Karolina, again.

"Oh, hey, is it normal for there to be somebody here who you know, but they don't know you?"

"Yes!" Topher confirmed, glad to be able to answer an actual question. "That... is a thing that happens. Like, I know this guy who this other guy I know knows from back home, except he's way younger and apparently less..." Hmm, how to describe hotass future!Tony's charming demeanor? "Um, direct. Less direct."

Beat.

"Nicer. Would be the word. Also, there's two siblings here who are from totally separate timelines, so the one that's supposed to be four years younger is two years older, weird, and if you ever meet anyone named Skywalker, it's no guarantee that the other ones here are the same ones they know from back home."

That was helpful, right?

At first Victor looked totally confused as he tried to parse all of that out. Then --

"Oh thank God," he said, looking relieved. "There's this girl who came in with us who I know really well at home, and she has no idea who I am. Kind of shook me up. I mean, I still don't love it, but at least now I know probably neither of us had a mental breakdown."

"Oooh, yeah," Topher said. "That definitely happens. Buuuut, if you didn't wind up serenading each other and sharing all your feelings, you can probably call it a success."

Topher, the Wiggins were not a basis for judging the success or failure of timeline-wackified reunions, okay?

"Plus, yeah, not crazy. Which is good news!"

Here, Victor, have a high-five in celebration.
