When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Thomasina couldn't help but grin at him. "We shall, indeed.

"May I ask, where are you from, Frank?" she added. "Have you traveled far to get here?"

"New York, 1959," Frank reported proudly. "Or New Rochelle, to be specific, but apparently the 1959 part is the interesting one around here. How about you?"

Thomasina blinked. "So I'm not the only one, then," she said. "Sidley Park, 1812. It's in Derbyshire."

She considered that. "That seems... remarkably odd. I wonder what the mechanism is for deciding on students to bring out of time?" And the mechanism for bringing them, but she was already working on that one.

"Maybe they distribute the promotional materials to every time and place they can think of, and it's just a matter of who finds what?" Frank offered. "The school would've had to have been founded pretty recently, then, or we'd be going to Fandom in our own times instead of now."

"Actually, I'm here rather unexpectedly," Thomasina explained. "I ended up in 2012 after jumping out of my window to escape a fire, and my... acceptance letter was waiting in the post of the person who found me upon my arrival."

"Okay, or that," Frank said slightly sheepishly after a moment. "Sorry about the... fire. Do you know if everything's okay now?"

Thomasina bit her lip. "Well, I'm the... only one who died in the fire," she explained. "Supposedly, at least, obviously, as I rather clearly escaped. But it did affect the life of... a friend of mine."

Her tutor. Her Septimus.

Oh.

"I'm sorry," Frank offered sincerely. "Is he badly hurt?"

He wasn't anything, not anymore, dead and gone for so, so long.

"Only in his heart," she said instead. "I hope that maybe I can change that, by somehow sending work back to him."
