When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Hi," said Jeff, who had apparently beaten his general anxiety issues in the face by staring at it long enough. "So I hear you're my teaching buddy!"

Thumbs up.

"It seems so!" Ronan replied, grinning. "I have to admit, I can't say this is somewhere I'd have thought I'd end up when I graduated from here. Or even really when I came back."

But the workshop idea had occured to him, and it was just too good to pass up -- so many of the students could use something like it, he thought.

"Neither did I," Jeff shared. "I mean, I thought I'd be on Lesbos by now, you know? But things happened."

Ronan had to stop for a moment. "... Island in the Mediterranean?" he asked. "Yeah, I half-expected I'd still be off-planet now. But I've been back on Earth for a year, almost, and I do love it."

"One day," Jeff sighed.

It was entirely possible he had a slightly warped idea of what the isle of Lesbos was actually like.

"Well, it's Earth, isn't it?" he recovered. "We've got... lakes, and bars, and women." Because they didn't have those in other places. "And apples," he added. "Er. So you've gone here and I've gone here so is there really anything you need to know?" Beat. "Don't say about apples."

"Gone here, and been working in town for almost a year, too," Ronan said, laughing a bit. "I don't think anything'll surprise me any more than it will any of the other veterans, and considering my own universe probably less than most."

He paused; he couldn't pass up the opportunity.

"What's an apple?"

"It's round," said Jeff. "And red. I don't like to talk about apples."

Ronan blinked, then nodded. "Duly noted," he said. "So, what are you teaching this semester, anyway?"

"Relationship Ed," Jeff said, shrugging both of his shoulders at once. "I was going to ask Jamie if he wanted to do our last class over again, but that didn't work out. And well I've got a lot of experience about all the tricky bits, you know?"

"Huh," Ronan said. "Sounds like a course I could have used as a student -- I can't say I've ever done well with relationships."

Relationships, no. Sex, yes.

"Well, neither have I," Jeff said. "That's the educational part."

Jeff's problems with relationships would probably not be anything like Ronan's problems with relationships.

No. Likely not.

"Teaching, then, from what hasn't worked?" Ronan asked. "That seems as logical a way as any to go about it."

"I just want to make sure no one makes the same mistakes I did," said Jeff.

Jeff, nobody made the mistakes you did.

"Because I've made some really bad mistakes."
