Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yes, we've met," Steve said. "I don't think they came away with the best opinion of me." Teenagers always objected strenuously to his 'teenagers should not be running around trying to be superheroes' stance. 'Victor Mancha' was ringing a bell now, but he'd been out of that scene for so long, and they were on the opposite coast, so he really didn't know for sure.

Then he smiled wryly and said, "Well, it's not exactly an uncommon name, but in this case, it's not just a coincidence. Deadpool is the vice principal, too, which...may tell you quite a bit about the school." Such as that it was nuts.

"Not really," Victor had to agree, on the part about his team's opinion. It was an understatement. "But I wasn't there, so..."

The truth was, he had days where he wasn't sure teenagers should be trying to be superheroes either. He just didn't see that many other choices.

"And yeah, Professor Skywalker mentioned Deadpool on the shuttle. It's, um -- not what I would have expected."

"I don't think it's what anyone would have expected," Steve agreed. "It's...surprisingly not as bad as it could be. Which I'm sure doesn't sound very reassuring. Have you met your big sibling yet, and all of that?"

"Yeah." Victor didn't sound terribly thrilled by it. "Think he wants to open me up and reroute my wiring, but yeah."

Well, that was alarming. Not the wiring part, of course, Steve couldn't care less about that, but, "Who's your big sibling?" he asked, concern seeping into his tone.

"Topher Brink," Victor said. "But I think I talked him down. He just got kind of excited about me being a cyborg."

Oh. Dear. "Well, Topher's...very intelligent," Steve said, when he realized he probably shouldn't talk ill of students to other students. He could see how that might not have been the best idea in the world, but had no idea how to express that to a new student without stretching the grounds of proper student-teacher relations. He finally settled on, "But I think letting another student mess with your wiring would probably be a bad idea in any case." There. That seemed neutral enough.

Victor managed not to say Duh, but he was pretty clearly thinking it.

"I agree, sir," he said instead. "Trust me, I don't let anybody poke around unless there's an emergency. I'm mostly self-healing anyhow."

"That's good to know," Steve said, and meant it. "I hope nothing comes up that will test that. We do have the occasional...incident, but nothing too major."

"I'm not bad in a fight," Victor reassured him. "But the nothing too major still sounds good."

"We had drop bears at graduation but that's been the biggest thing lately," Steve told him.
ultron_junior: ([neu] what are you saying?)

"Like, bears raining from the sky?" Victor checked. "That doesn't really sound all pomp & circumstance-friendly."

"Are there a lot of people with powers here?" Victor asked, which ... sort of followed. "The brochure said stuff about special abilities, but nobody on the shuttle was showing off or anything."

"A lot," Steve said. "Not all. It really varies. Has anyone explained to you about the island being an interdimensional nexus point? So we really do get people from all over. Some students have powers, some don't, some come from a universe where no one has powers, or everyone does..."

"Not in those words," Victor said, frowning a little as he assimilated it. "I mean, it's not incredibly far off from what people have told me, but it's still weird to get used to."

"I think it strikes everyone that way at first," Steve said with a little shrug. "And then gradually the completely insane becomes commonplace. So it's a little like New York that way," he quipped.
