Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Though Fanw's hummingbird heart had settled for a little while, made a little easier thanks to some of the other kids she had met on the shuttle, it started racing again and beating in her ears the moment she went to go check and see her room assignment. She supposed she shouldn't be so terrified to share a space with someone; her entire family shared the entire space of a small flat together. But this was different. This wasn't family. This was a complete stranger. She bravely forced herself to take in the information, though.

Room 403, with Peeta Mellark.

Oddly, that made her feel better. Peeta was such a strange name, but it was not too different from Petra, and a lot of the people she'd met so far had strange names. They probably thought Fawn was a pretty strange name, too. So she bit her lower lip a little, and looked up from the list with a concerned expression, wondering how she might be able to find this Peeta girl before finding the room itself, so she could be better prepared. She wondered if any of other girls would misinterpret her scanning their nametags, and she occasionally smoothed out her own.

Peeta was used to strange names after watching the Games his whole life and Fawn seemed like something to come out of the more woodsy Districts like 7. The question over whether it was a guy's name or a girl's was answered when he actually spotted the right name tag.

"Fawn?" Peeta confirmed. "I'm Peeta."

Fawn turned her head to the sound of the voice addressing her and stared for a moment, the shock hitting her hard. Her eyes started at his head and worked their way down, every bit of him confirming what her mind was having such a hard time grasping at this moment.

"You're a boy," she stated, plainly, though her eyes were wide and the inside of her was a turmoil of panic and fear. Why was she roomed with a boy? Did the school make a mistake? Did they think that she was a boy, too, because of her...

"And I'm not," she added, with particular firmness, just so that everyone was crystal clear on that point. She wasn't. It was a mistake. It had to be a mistake. She wanted to just shrink into herself or start crying or something, but she couldn't, she couldn't let any of that show and she just gripped the side of the table for strength.

"Yeah, I noticed that." It wasn't that big of a deal to Peeta. Rooming with a girl couldn't possibly be all that different from rooming with guys. "Is that going to be a problem? 'Cause I'm sure we could talk to somebody if it makes you uncomfortable..."

Was it a problem? Fawn seemed to shrink a little, her face twisting as a tick got the best of her. It would probably be more of a problem to cause trouble over something like this, so she closed her eyes tightly and shook her head, trying to shake away the contortions of her face.

"No," she said, a little hurriedly. "No, it's not a problem. I, um...."

Her brain reeled and she forced herself to look at him. "Do you have any sisters?" she asked, brows furrowed, voice a little hopefully. She remembered all of Cliff's girlfriends always commented on how he was so good with girls because he had so many sisters, so maybe, hopefully, Peeta was like Cliff, and it wouldn't be much different. He kind of looked like Cliff, a little, if you squinted and thought of him being taller and thinner, not so broad-shouldered...and Fawn realized she should really try to think of him as not so broad-shouldered...

"Two brothers," Peeta said, sounding a little apologetic although he wasn't sure why. "We all shared a room together so this won't be my first time sharing a living space with someone. I don't even snore or anything."

Two brothers wasn't very reassuring, but at least the last part made her laugh a little. It was a distressed, nervous sort of laugh, still, just an uncertain little breath that petered out toward the edge of crying. She wasn't going to cry, though. It wasn't that bad; no one she'd talked to so far turned out that bad, so it was going to be okay, and, if it wasn't, then she could just run away and hitch-hike across the country and join a circus or something.

She offered Peeta an apologetic smile, though she kept her eyes firmly down and shied away from him a little. "Me, neither," she offered. "And my family shared a small space, too, but it's mostly sisters."

"I think we're gonna be all right," Peeta assured her with a smile. "I'm a pretty easy person to live with, though I won't blame you for not believing that until you see it."

Peeta did seem really nice, and Fawn even managed to find a smile to offer back, but her brain was still reeling with thoughts that they made a mistake, that they thought she was a boy and that's why she was rooming with one, and that really wasn't his fault.

"I think I could believe it," she offered, "but, yeah. Totally going to reserve my judgement."

The smile grew a little bit in one corner of her mouth because she was actually attempting a joke, and it made her feel a little better. "Especially about the snoring."

"Oh believe me, if there ever was a point in my life where I snored my brothers would have done whatever they could to make it stop," he said. "They wouldn't have put up with all that."

Talking about siblings made Fawn already start to miss her home, but, at the same time, it made her feel a little bit better, especially about Peeta, since his family sounded a little like hers so far.

"Are they older brothers, or younger brothers?" she asked.

"Both older. I'm the baby of the family," he shared. "What about you and your siblings?"

Re: Meet Your Roommate [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] yinandyango.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Almost the baby." Fawn gained a little bit of confidence, thinking she at least had that over Peeta. "Cookie and Cliff are older, and so's VidamiĆ”; she's my half-sister. And then there's Caitlin. I think she was kind of a surprise; I don't think my parents wanted any more children after me."

Because one freak was probably enough.

"Wow, that's a ton of siblings," Peeta said, shaking his head. "How do you survive?"

"Usually by just keeping out of the way," Fawn said with a small smile. "Now that I think about it, it's going to be a little weird having to share with just one other person."

"I was thinking the same thing," Peeta said. "And I doubt you'll steal my clothes like my brothers did."

[identity profile] yinandyango.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Fawn ducked her head with a laugh. "Yeah," she assured him, "you don't have to worry about that. I'm not going to have to worry about you stealing mine, though, am I?"

"I don't really think I could pull off girl clothes," Peeta said, shaking his head. "I don't have the legs for it."

"And you'd stretch out all my sweaters in all the wrong ways, too," Fawn added, because that was what her sisters had always said whenever she wanted to borrow on of theirs.
