Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

So this was George, curiously taking in the sign and... completely failing to match the girl's nametag underneath with the name he'd been given. Perhaps he'd misread? He was sure he hadn't.

He stepped out, and raised a hand in a half-wave. "That would be me m--" This was not the Weird, this was not the Weird. It was a mantra he would be repeating a lot. "Hi."

"Hey ya, George." Kenzi grinned and offered him a Chips Ahoy. "Cookie?"

So, he could read, and he sounded ... sort of from not-here, but not in a really intense way. And he wasn't questioning the name yet. Heeee. "I'm your assigned Big Sib."

George nodded, half his mouth pulling into a smile. "That would be wonderful." He hadn't eaten since crossing the boundary, and that took a little out of you.

"Forgive me, but I was... expecting a Kenzi?" Which was not a name he recognised, to be sure, but neither was Quinn.

Kenzi handed over the cookie, and had the sudden insane urge to tell him she'd died, and they'd had to bring in "Quinn" as a replacement. But... that would be too harsh. She still got the impulse to mess with people sometimes, but this was her Little Sib.

So she said nonchalantly, "I've got a lot of names, actually. Toni Soprano. Svetlana. Sylvia. Astrid. And yeah, okay... Kenzi." She grinned at him, and bit into her own cookie. "How about you? George? Georgie? Drayton?"

"Just... George," he told her, nodding again as he took a cookie. Sharing his 'Cursed Prince' moniker this early was just asking for mocking. "I was only Georgie when I was very young."

"I wasn't expecting a new sibling coming here. It's rather nice."

"It is, isn't it? My big sib just graduated. I figured I should pay it forward, help somebody new out." Kenzi smirked. "So, is this what you expected? And did you want to come here, or did you get drafted? And where are you from?"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] nottheshoes.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 11:31 am (UTC)(link)
"It's... not exactly what I expected, no," he admitted, glancing around. "I fear this is not the world I was expecting."

Actually, that was a good thing. He could feel the magic in the air, and if Nancy had sent him somewhere truly Broken there would have been a problem. As it was, he was feeling rather better about the whole thing than he had been.

"I was drafted, I suppose. I was told it would be good for me." Not in quite so many words.

"Oh, man, me too. But I got used to the place, and if you can get past some of the weirdness, it's actually pretty cool. I've been here almost a year now." She cocked her head. "So, nobody told you this was some kind of, umm, dimensional cross-roads thing? Lots of world touching it? But it sounds like you've at least heard of other worlds, which puts you one up on some people who show up here."

"I wasn't told much." George curved a small smile. "But now you say that, it makes more sense, that I would be sent here. I was worried it would be like our Broken."

"It has certain similarities, but--" Also some very stark differences. "Most people there have no idea other worlds coexist with theirs."

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Aha. Well. A lot of the newbies won't know either, and a lot of people didn't know before they got here, buuut... yeah. When one person grows up somewhere magic's everyday, and someone else grows up on another planet, it tends to be a giveaway." Kenzi took another bite of her cookie. "Do they really call some place Broken? Yikes. This place would probably be 'Crazy.'"

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling [Summer 2012-1]

[identity profile] nottheshoes.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
George smiled, "We do. They have no magic, so... Broken. The other side is Weird, because they do."

"Which is almost like 'Crazy', don't you think?" This place had magic too, he could feel it. It felt right.

"Broken and Weird. I love that," Kenzi said, enchanted. She grinned at George. "So which one did you grow up in? I'm from Canada-- it's north of here, a different country. Same year. Some people here time-traveled too. Plus we get all types, there's a couple princesses, and a couple soldier-types, and well. Me." She preened, then winked at George. "There's all these warnings I'm supposed to give you, but what are you most worried about?" Nom, cookie.

"I actually grew up between the two. A sort of middle ground. The Edge." He didn't live there now, but he would still always be an Edger despite that. "We have a Canada too. But not the same one, I don't think."

"I was a little worried I'd have to lie about where I came from-- But I see that is unlikely to be a problem." He'd pretended to be from the Broken before, but it was awkward, given how little time he'd actually spent there lately. "We don't have the same geography, or technology. It would have gone wrong somehow."

"Edge. Awesome." Kenzi waved her hand. "Don't worry about it, yeah. Everybody finds something that kinda weirds them out when they get here, but it's pretty live-and-let-live. The classes are easy, especially for summer. More like camp than anything else. The shops and restaurants in town might be hiring, if you're looking to pick up some extra cash?" He looked like he could use an extra meal, too. "I think there's even a class on 21st Century America, to get you adjusted."

"I think... someone has seen to my workshop options." Nancy Virai, more precisely. "And my brother-in-law to the financial side of things." He might be an Edger mongrel, but Declan was not. Money was one thing the ward of the Marshall of the Southern Provinces did not have to worry about.

"... I've met my roommate, and she seems. Well, she's a girl. Is that normal here too?"

"Good to have family who looks out for you," Kenzi said approvingly. Then grinned. "Yeah, my first roomie was a guy. Bart. We just put up a screen for changing, and he cleaned stuff up." Because he had super-speed and Kenzi was a slob. "That gonna bug you? What's your roomie like?"

"... I don't completely understand her." Because she was very, very British and while his accent hinted that he was himself, Adrianglia was in fact very different.

"But she won't bug me, I'm used to my brother. He's far more irritating." Jack practically made it his life's work to be a pain. Typical little brother.

"Heh. Give it some time. If you hate each other, you're allowed to switch after a couple weeks. Sounds like it'll probably be okay though. Who did you get?" Kenzi took another cookie, biting into it. "Oh, if you see little green things with a lot of teeth, stay away. They're gremlins and their bites make you hallucinate. And, uh. I'm guessing you didn't know about the invasions?"

Sharp teeth, stay away. Got it. "Ah, her name is Ace." Not Dorothy and she didn't think of herself as the sort to be referred to as 'lady'. Facts he needed to remember.

"And I know some historic ones? Like the Gaulish invasions of Adrianglia." Not the same, George.

"Ace, gotcha." She'd be on the look-out, maybe help out Ace too. "Ah, aha. No." She paused, thinking how to explain this. "Okay, sometimes... weird stuff happens for no reason. Like you wake up? And you're a talking pony. That was the first weird thing that happened to me here." Kenzi beamed. "And it was awesome."
