Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Yeah, that was weird. He shook it anyway.

"That makes you the first sibling I've ever had," he said. "I'm not so sure what to do with that one."

"I'm an only child, too," Anna told him. "But the school assigned me a big sibling, Tara, when I got here, and she helped me out a lot. So I thought I should pass it on. Let's start with the basics. Where are you from, and what year is it there? I don't know how much of a surprise it'll come as to you, but that's a relevant question here."

"I'm from Telos," Atton lied easily. "But year? What, you don't have calendars here?"

Did he not just hear the part about it being a relevant question? Sigh. "Of course we do. But they might not say the same thing as yours." Or you might be using a completely different calendar. "We get people from different time periods."

He heard it. But what did 'relevant' mean?

"Okay," Atton said. "This is just one of those things where I'm going to get a headache if I ask, right?"

He waved a hand, then rattled off the year in his galaxy, which... was not going to tell her anything besides that he wasn't from this galaxy.

Anna took that in, then said, "Then you're definitely not from around here." Telos could be in Greece or something, she didn't know. "It's May 5, 2012 here, which...isn't really going to mean anything to you besides that now you know the date." She sort of shrugged like 'what can you do?' "Fandom is...it's special. People come here from all different universes. People who aren't like anything you could ever even have at home." Like Professor Pie. Or... "Like me. I'm. Well, I'm a ghost."

Of course, for all Anna knew every third person in Telos could have been a ghost, but it was all she had.

"Most people here don't know that," Anna added hastily. "I don't want to deal with all the...poor little dead girl. So if you could not spread it around that would be great."

Every third person on Telos was definitely a ghost right now - maybe more. It was starting to occur to Atton that maybe he didn't particularly need to pose as a refugee here-- or at least, he wouldn't have to worry about keeping his details straight.

"I thought ghosts were supposed to be more blue and shimmery," he commented. He'd have been more incredulous if his gut hadn't been screaming 'bad feeling' at him since he met the girl. Still, weird. "But sure, I can keep a secret. No worries."

"Well, maybe they are where you're from," Anna said. "I don't know. But this is me." Or half of her, anyway. At least he wasn't asking her to prove it. "Anyway, most people are really understanding about how everyone's different here, so if you don't understand something or need help with the technology, you can ask. I'll help you with what I can, but I'm just now figuring out computers."

"I think I can handle a couple of computers," he said. Whether that would actually prove to be true was debatable. Some technology... "So what's a dead girl do for fun around here? You know, in case I get bored."

"Well, I work the door at one of the local bars, the Devil's Nest," she said. Yes, pretty little Anna was a bouncer. "But we card there. The other bar, Caritas, doesn't. It's a karaoke bar." So it was a trade-off. "And there's usually something going on in the common rooms. Some of the TV here is really interesting. The hockey playoffs are going on right now!" She sounded quite excited about that, yes. "Do you have hockey in Telos?"

"Not a lot of anything going on on Telos right now," Atton said vaguely. "I'll give you 'what's hockey', though."

"It's a sport that's popular in Canada, where I'm from," Anna explained. "It's played on ice, and the goal is to hit the puck--it's a rubber disc?--into the goal with your stick. And there are a lot of fights," she added when she realized she'd made it sound pretty boring in trying to keep her explanation as basic as possible. "So what's it like where you're from, then?"

"Telos? Right now it's one big crater in space," Atton said. "The Jedi Civil War isn't doing much to keep things nice and clean."

"Not really important to you out here," Atton said. "Though if you ever run into one, they'll probably think otherwise."

"Are they ghost hunters?" Anna asked. "Because I can handle ghost hunters."

"Just guys in cloaks with funny religious convictions and a funnier way of dealing with them," Atton replied. "No ghost hunters. I think."

Anna knew one of the professors wore a cloak, but she didn't know him, so she wasn't anywhere near drawing that connection. But the religious thing made them sound like Catholic clergy, who had been known to do an exorcism or sixty in their time, so Anna made a mental note to steer clear. "Well, you won't have to worry about that here," she assured him. "There aren't any wars here. At least. Not in this country. And definitely none about the Jedi."

"Glad to hear that," Atton said. He wasn't even lying this time. "Sounds like I chose to go to the right place. I was getting sick of hanging around refugee areas."

"Yes, that...doesn't sound like it would be very nice at all," Anna said. "It's safe here, even if is are the occasional...strange invasion. Things like dolls that bite," she added hastily, "not other countries or anything like that! And they don't usually last very long."

That was a completely reasonable reaction. "I've only been here a semester myself, but sometimes, there'll just be...weird things, all over the island suddenly. Once it was dolls, only they moved and some of them were trying to hurt people. Another time it was these rabbits with sharp teeth, and there were a couple of other things, too. But they always go away again in a few days. You do have to watch out for the gremlins, though. They're these...green pest things in the dorms, and they bite, and then you hallucinate."

"So you're saying I should not be throwing my blasters in the ocean," Atton said, but his brow was creased in a mildly disbelieving frown. "... and take some kind of anti-hallucinatory... something."

"I don't think there's an antidote," Anna said apologetically. "But it wears off fairly quickly. Just keep an eye out, I guess. And if a girl named Kenzi tries to sell you repellent it's a scam."

"I'll keep that in mind." He threw a glance at the crowd.

"Don't suppose you can point this Kenzi girl out for me?"

Always good to know who the scammers were.
