Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

When the planning for the new semester had started, no one had really noticed that the welcome picnic would coincide with Cinco de Mayo. When the food arrived and all of it, including the desserts, had somehow ended up as a variety of Mexican food, well, it was a little too late to change anything.

Hopefully, the wandering mariachi band that had shown up wouldn't throw anyone either. It was a festive day of new arrivals, after all.

The blue and gold tables and chairs had been set out, along with nametags and the lists of Big and Little Siblings, and rooms and roommates for the new students. Assuming the shuttle arrived with all of the students and teachers in one piece, everything was set for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up, have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Of course, he hadn't the faintest what a Stacey was supposed to look like (mostly he'd been scanning for nametags), but the sign was definitely a clue that that was the person he was looking for.

"That would be me," the accent was a bizarre mix of Scandanavian and... something from the American South. And the clothing- well, he'd deliberately chosen his least flashy doublet and breeches but they were still... a doublet and breeches. "And you would be Stacey?"

The outfit was a little weird to her, but it was probably trendy over there in Denmark. Give her a couple days and she'd be trying to see if she could find a way to wear something like it herself.

"I would," she said, smiling because he was cute and had an accent and she was so rubbing this in Claudia's face telling Claudia about this later. "Hi. Welcome to Fandom! You'll love it here, I promise."

Because she was here, duh.

"Is that a promise?" he couldn't help but ask.

"Of course. You're away from home with no supervision, you hardly have to go to class and your big sister is awesome," Stacey replied. "What's not to love?"

"Technically?" Ulrik said. "The fact that this wasn't my intended destination at all. As much as I look forward to spending time with my, as you say, awesome big sister, I wish there were some way of contacting my family back home and assuring them that I am, in fact, quite well."

...Details.

"Oh. Letters usually work?" she tried.

"I'm not certain they would, in my case," Ulrik said solemnly. "You see, back home, it is the year 1636." And he seemed... remarkably unperturbed about finding himself nearly four hundred years in the future, strangley enough.

"...Huh," she said, tilting her head at him. "So you're really, really, really retro."

Sigh, Stacey.

'strangley', fingers?

"I'm sorry- retro?" his English was pretty good, he felt, but there was still the occasional idiom that he didn't quite grasp.

"You know, when something that was on trend before current times comes back around to be cool again," she explained.

"Well," he smiled at that. "I'm gratified, then, that you have seen fit to deem me as 'cool'." And he was silently thanking Eddie Cantrell's colloquial-ridden English lessons for the fact that he knew what 'cool' meant, at least.

"I have," she said with a smile. "Okay, so I'm guessing being from when you are, you've figured out things aren't totally normal here?"

"I think that may be something of an understatement," Ulrik observed wryly.

Though really, he came from a world where 20th century Americans and 17th century Europeans coexisted, so. Stones and glass houses.

"Have you heard about the gremlins and people into animals, too?" she asked.

"I... have not," he admitted.

"Well, those things happen," she said. "And I think it's maybe a little overblown, but people turn into animals and sometimes bunnies try to kill you, I guess. But if you ever see a little green thing, that's a gremlin. Just let it have whatever it's going for that isn't your ankle."
