"Algebra II", Thursday, Period 4

Electroclash, standing at the front of the classroom looking uncomfortable in her teacher uniform, didn't know the first fucking thing about algebra. She also hadn't bothered to find out much. Or anything at all. As far as she'd gone was a phonecall back home to Jenny to pester her about coming up with a test for her, and all that had yeilded was a cheerful earful about ethics or a teacher's pride or some other unhelpful bollocks like that.

And now there were lizard things all over her classroom. Because that was about as normal as algebra, wasn't it?

"Right," she said, trying to ignore the animals for now. As if they weren't her problem. "Welcome to your final for... Algebra II. Which we've been studying for an entire term now, so I'm sure you're as well prepared for this exam as I am." Riiiight. "So, you already have your papers, and here's... your exam: Write an essay on what you feel is the most important thing algebra has to give to the world."

Yes.

"Also, extra credit for anyone who gets the most lizards out of here."

[ocd up!]

Stephanie wasn't boggling at the gizka. More like freaking the crap out because --

Well, according to her internal monologue: Holy crap so not any good at algebra this is a joke this is a joke rightrightright? Aieeeeeeeeeeeeee.

And then she heard what the exam actually was. Whew.

Raven knew more about the history of math than how to do the actual math itself, so she was actually able to come up with a vaguely decent essay about what algebra had given the world. Vaguely.

Who knew some of the things she'd learned from Bruce and picked up from Tim in the course of vigilante-ing would end up having some practical normal-world application?

Okay, she probably should've known.

Anyway, Stephanie's essay sort of skewed off from algebra into great feats of engineering, impressive architectural accomplishments (bridges and such), and skyscrapers. There was a lot about the height of skyscrapers. NO REASON.

Lex's exam thoroughly explained numerous real world applications of algebra, before segueing off into a discussion of calculus. Juat because.

Geeeeeeek.

Squall wrote a very short paragraph about how algebra made science possible. Then he got up to do his extra credit.

Oh! Emotion Taxi Raven could be helpful here. The gizka didn't seem evil, so surely Karla couldn't disapprove if Raven were to sweep up a whole bunch of them with her Soul-Self and transport them to the park when no one they had to hide their gifts from was looking.

That might prove to be a mistake later.

Now, the fun part!

Squall's gunblade was safely hidden away in the weapons locker, but he managed to find a metal yardstick in the classroom. Other people might have problems with killing the lizard-things, but he just saw them as a nuisance. Wielding the yardstick expertly, he proceeded to use it to smite the creatures handily.

Lisa had a deeply geeky pride in her math skills. So when the exam turned out to be an essay, she almost looked a little crestfallen -- who wouldn't rather do equations?

But mostly, she was worried because of the lizards. She had her legs tucked up under her on her seat and was hoping they couldn't jump.

Not having studied algebra for a while meant Billy was much happier with a written "test" especially since it meant he could BS about how algebra helped superheroing. It might not have been "normal" but it was his small way of thanking Electroclash for letting him be her TA.

[identity profile] 800-math-sats.livejournal.com 2012-04-19 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hi, Lisa Miller. So why did you decide to do an essay test?" Lisa asked, looking disappointed. "Algebra is so incredibly useful, I was looking forward to seeing how the students did. Maybe working a few equations out for the fun of it."

Because she was an enormous geek.

[identity profile] 800-math-sats.livejournal.com 2012-04-19 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, I see where you're going with that," Lisa said. "It's just -- you don't score high on the math SATs by being able to explain how you feel about polynomials, you know? And I'm sure some of the students planned on getting into college."

And away from the lizard things.

[identity profile] 800-math-sats.livejournal.com 2012-04-19 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Lisa looked skeptical. "You don't really teach math," she guessed. "Do you?"

And now she wanted to die inside. All those poor equations, crying out to be solved.

[identity profile] 800-math-sats.livejournal.com 2012-04-19 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Lisa nodded grimly. "And the thing you have really been teaching all term is called...."

[identity profile] 800-math-sats.livejournal.com 2012-04-19 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Lisa looked surprised. Also impressed.

"Sad as I am it's not really algebra," she said, "that's ... pretty cool. How did it go?"

[identity profile] 800-math-sats.livejournal.com 2012-04-19 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Lisa glanced to the lizards. "If one of your villains is behind the exploding creature population, I hope you give them an A."
