Mad Kings & Queens: Raving Royals and How To Survive Them (Wednesday, 4th Period)

When the class arrived today, they'd find the desks missing. Instead, there were cushions on the floor surrounding a number of low tables, and each table held one of two boxes.

"I'm going to assume that most of you are completely unable to focus on anything remotely academic today," Ghanima stated. "So today we're going to do a practical application."

"There is always a cost to removing a corrupt monarch from power," she continued. "People. Resources. There's not even a guarantee that you'll win."

"Each of you is a revolutionary trying to save their people. The person opposite you is a corrupt or insane ruler, that must be deposed." Ghanima held up one pawn, smiling. "It's up to each of you to decide where to draw the line for acceptable loss. Each army you lose is a point off your grade, unless you win it all."

"Pair up, or make teams, and have fun."

[Last verse, same as the first. OCD up!]

Anakin staked out a chess board as soon as he saw it; it looked like a simpler, low-tech version of dejarik, and he figured it would be a piece of cake.

"Do you play?" Tara asked, sitting across him at the table. "I ... sort of know how to, a little."

Anakin shook his head. "I've never played chess, but I think I get the concept. You have to use strategy to move your pieces to the other side, take out your opponent's pieces, and try to avoid losing yours, right?"

Tara's head dipped in a nod. "Pretty much," she said. "There are special ways the pieces move, and the king and queen are the most important ones. When the other player takes your king, they win."

"Not that different from dejarik then, except the pieces don't move," Anakin concluded with a quick, very Han-like grin as he pulled pieces and an instructions sheet out of the box. "Want to pick a color first?"

"I guess," Tara said, neatly picking the white pieces out of the box and setting them up on her side of the board. "I've ... never played dejarik. It's weird how we always end up playing Earth games."

"Well, we are on Earth," Anakin replied, unthinkingly reaching out with the Force to grab a bishop he'd jostled off the edge of the table. "So it didn't seem that weird. I guess you've got a point, though. It's a new experience for me, but it must not be that exciting for anyone who's lived here their whole life."

"It's exciting enough," Tara said, watching his use of telekinesis with appreciation but no real surprise. "I'd ... probably freak out a little if everything was just wrong. I'm not that adventurous. But I worry about how it looks to people like you."

She nudged a pawn forward as her opening move.

"It is a little primitive," Anakin admitted. Which was an understatement; it was a lot primitive in a number of ways, at least compared to Coruscant; places like Dantooine were a different story. "But educational, at least. It's a different way to look at things, for me."

He studied the board with a frown, glanced at the instructions, and moved a pawn forward two squares.

Tara eyed the board, trying to remember the little she had ever known about chess strategy, and brought out a knight.

"Yeah?" she asked. "Like ... what have you learned?"

[OOC: I have not played in 20 years or something. Handwave power?]

"That I take a lot for granted at home," Anakin said promptly, and a bit abashedly, nudging another piece forward. "And that you can get a really, really different perspective on things from people who've never heard of them before."

Like people who had no idea about his grandfather, for example.

"I can imagine," Tara said. "Just meeting people from so many different worlds, you learn stuff."

A pause as she debated her next move. "I'll miss it when I go home."

"I wish I could go home," Anakin admitted. He propped his chin up on his hands and studied the board intently. "But it's not so bad here."

"Oh, sure, two whole years from now," Anakin said, sulkily. "And maybe for visits every now and then. But Uncle Luke was pretty stern about me staying here."

Tara smiled, suddenly feeling very mature. "It goes fast," she promised. "I came before my sophomore year, and then I blinked, and now ... here I am, ready to get out of here."

"Nobody ever says that at the beginning," Anakin argued halfheartedly, exactly like a kid who thought he had a convincing line of reasoning (because he was). "It's always after the time's passed that it seems like nothing."

"Well, yeah," Tara said. "But ... maybe it's nice to know that at the end, it'll look like nothing? Not that i would have believed that, back then."

That would be assuming he had two years left . . .

"Maybe." Anakin didn't look terribly convinced. "It still makes now feel like forever."
