Basic Strategy, Monday, Period 4
Class met in the Danger Shop today, which had been transformed to look like a sailing ship. It was only after a few moments spent exploring the vessel that most students might notice the crisis: A huge, jagged hole in the side of the boat was letting water into the lower decks, and smoke was creeping up from that area.
"Welcome," Tyrion said, once he was confident the situation had become apparent to most of the class, "to a sinking ship. As this got me into trouble last time, I must stress: The ship and the sea are feigned. None of you will drown on my watch."
That point made, he went into his main lecture. "Your situation is as follows. A group of four of you have chartered this boat for a weekend trip. None of you have much sailing experience -- if you do, pray put it out of your mind for the moment -- so the ship is being sailed by a hired captain and his mate. Overnight, a fire broke out on the boat. When the ship's crew went down to investigate, they were swept away and are presumed lost. Because it happened overnight and the boat has been adrift for several hours, you've only the faintest idea where you are. Your best guess is that you're about a thousand leagues southwest from the nearest land."
"The fire is out, but the ship won't float much longer. Most of the ship's supplies have already been damaged by the water and smoke. However, you have saved a wooden lifeboat, plus the following items" -- he gestured to a pile of things to his left -- "and whatever's in your pockets, with one exception: Due to our remote location, your telephones are useless. However, you may assume at least one person in your group has some means for starting a fire. Any powers you have are in play as well."
1. An octant.
2. A small looking glass.
3. A quantity of gauze
4. A 5 gallon jug of water
5. A case of hardtack and jerky.
6. Maps of the ocean
7. A floating seat cushion
8. A small jar of wildfire(napalm)
9. A live, caged messenger raven
10. 20 square feet of waxed waterproof canvas
11. Shark repellent
12. One quart of strong rum
13. 15 feet of good rope
14. 2 boxes of sweets
15. A fishing kit
"Your job for this class is to try to come to consensus with your group about the five things you'd want to save the most. After that, climb into the life boats and set off in hopes of rescue."

Today was not that day.
Group A - Squall, Ben, Jack Carter, Petra
Re: Group A - Squall, Ben, Jack Carter, Petra
"Then we need the tarp to protect us from the elements and collect rainwater for once the water we have runs out. And I think that's five." She was counting the two things of food as one item and hoping no one in charge noticed, yes. "And then if it's possible I'd like to also have the telescope, rope, fishing kit, gauze, and the maps if we're taking the fire stuff. They're no use to us but we can use them as fuel. We should probably let the bird go so it can have a chance; if we take it with us we'll just have to feed it."
She looked around at the group and smiled. "So, yeah, any questions?"
She realized she probably ought to have let someone else have a say, but seriously: Been there, done this, almost got shot.

"I'm with her," Jack said. "Though I think we can use the tarp to collect water condensation as well."
Group B - Seifer, Alice, Dorothy, Karla
Group C- Darcy, Wesley, Daenerys, Loki
Re: Group C- Darcy, Wesley, Daenerys, Loki
"Right," he said, clapping his hands together. "Well. I suppose we might begin by eliminating the unnecessary items one by one until we've only the five most important left, then?"

This might take more time than he'd expected. There were sort of a lot of things.

Or thinking outside the proverbial box on the matter.
Group D - Warren, Blysse & Blind Seer, Jace, Mercy
Re: Group D - Warren, Blysse & Blind Seer, Jace, Mercy
She hated boats. Hated them.
Re: Group D - Warren, Blysse & Blind Seer, Jace, Mercy
"We're going to need the water," he offered. "Seawater is no good to drink, right? And we can use the container later to collect more, if it rains?"
He tilted his head a little.
"I can fly, so... I mean, presumably, I'd be able to at least get up there and scout around and... I don't know. Use the rope and try to pull the boat toward land, while you guys row?"
Re: Group D - Warren, Blysse & Blind Seer, Jace, Mercy
very late to the game. "So, water, rope, probably the food..."End of Class [3/05]
"If you were curious," he said, "the official correct answer is that the most important things to rescue are anything you could use to send a signal, such as the mirror and the wildfire -- though you'd have to come up with a way to get it far from the lifeboat before you set it aflame. Water and food are also worth saving, as is the waterproofed tarp. The least valuable things are the octant and maps, as they're useless if you don't know where you are or how to read them, and the raven, since there's no guarantee there's anyone for it to get a message to within flying range. You'd also have to share your food with it. Everything else is in the middle."
"Does anyone have counter arguments?"
