Basic Strategy, Monday, Period 4

Class met in the Danger Shop today, which had been transformed to look like a sailing ship. It was only after a few moments spent exploring the vessel that most students might notice the crisis: A huge, jagged hole in the side of the boat was letting water into the lower decks, and smoke was creeping up from that area.

"Welcome," Tyrion said, once he was confident the situation had become apparent to most of the class, "to a sinking ship. As this got me into trouble last time, I must stress: The ship and the sea are feigned. None of you will drown on my watch."

That point made, he went into his main lecture. "Your situation is as follows. A group of four of you have chartered this boat for a weekend trip. None of you have much sailing experience -- if you do, pray put it out of your mind for the moment -- so the ship is being sailed by a hired captain and his mate. Overnight, a fire broke out on the boat. When the ship's crew went down to investigate, they were swept away and are presumed lost. Because it happened overnight and the boat has been adrift for several hours, you've only the faintest idea where you are. Your best guess is that you're about a thousand leagues southwest from the nearest land."

"The fire is out, but the ship won't float much longer. Most of the ship's supplies have already been damaged by the water and smoke. However, you have saved a wooden lifeboat, plus the following items" -- he gestured to a pile of things to his left -- "and whatever's in your pockets, with one exception: Due to our remote location, your telephones are useless. However, you may assume at least one person in your group has some means for starting a fire. Any powers you have are in play as well."

1. An octant.
2. A small looking glass.
3. A quantity of gauze
4. A 5 gallon jug of water
5. A case of hardtack and jerky.
6. Maps of the ocean
7. A floating seat cushion
8. A small jar of wildfire(napalm)
9. A live, caged messenger raven
10. 20 square feet of waxed waterproof canvas
11. Shark repellent
12. One quart of strong rum
13. 15 feet of good rope
14. 2 boxes of sweets
15. A fishing kit

"Your job for this class is to try to come to consensus with your group about the five things you'd want to save the most. After that, climb into the life boats and set off in hopes of rescue."

Explore? Admire? Ohhhh no. Firekeeper was a little too busy trying not to vomit over the edge of the ship, thanks.

Petra spent a few minutes leaning her forehead against the ship's railing, trying not to have a PTSD freakout.

Once Petra got over her freakout, she paid careful attention to the lecture and started looking around at their supplies, mentally categorizing and ranking them.

You know... at some point Jack might take a course at Fandom that would have a class that wouldn't try to kill him. Scenario wise.

Today was not that day.

Re: Group A - Squall, Ben, Jack Carter, Petra

"Been there, done this," Petra announced to her group. "Well, on an island, so that's different, but the principle is the same. I have," and she hefted her large, overloaded bag, "a couple of bottles of water, some power bars, and a lighter and mirror in here, too. Top five...let's see, the food and water are obvious, and we need the mirror and the...what the hell is this?" She examined the napalm. "It starts fires? Okay, if it floats and will burn on water we need it, too, for signaling for rescuers, otherwise it's just a hazard, so, does anyone know about this stuff?

"Then we need the tarp to protect us from the elements and collect rainwater for once the water we have runs out. And I think that's five." She was counting the two things of food as one item and hoping no one in charge noticed, yes. "And then if it's possible I'd like to also have the telescope, rope, fishing kit, gauze, and the maps if we're taking the fire stuff. They're no use to us but we can use them as fuel. We should probably let the bird go so it can have a chance; if we take it with us we'll just have to feed it."

She looked around at the group and smiled. "So, yeah, any questions?"

She realized she probably ought to have let someone else have a say, but seriously: Been there, done this, almost got shot.

Ben grinned. "Sounds good to me." He crouched down to examine the napalm. "I think it might burn on water, but I don't know which variation this is. Might just be easier to bring combustibles that aren't quite so unstable."

Jack opened his mouth to say something and then just sort of shrugged and jabbed his thumb at Petra.

"I'm with her," Jack said. "Though I think we can use the tarp to collect water condensation as well."

Wesley had to admit that this exercise had an intriguing element to it, in addition to the usual desire to do well in class.

"Right," he said, clapping his hands together. "Well. I suppose we might begin by eliminating the unnecessary items one by one until we've only the five most important left, then?"

"As long as this happens before we drown." Darcy agreed, ignoring the bit about not being able to drown during this episode. "Also, I vote dumping the sweets."

"I dislike this wildfire," Loki added helpfully, giving their supplies a suspicious look. "I would suggest we rid ourselves of it."

"Yes," Wesley agreed, setting it aside. "As well as the rum."

This might take more time than he'd expected. There were sort of a lot of things.

Re: Group C- Darcy, Wesley, Daenerys, Loki

[identity profile] taseredagod.livejournal.com 2012-03-05 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"The rum can be used for fire and uh calories." Darcy argued. "The octant seems mostly useless."

Re: Group C- Darcy, Wesley, Daenerys, Loki

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2012-03-05 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"The octant is for navigation," Wesley corrected her. "The rum, on the other hand, is a heavy bottle that will weigh down our raft unnecessarily, while Professor Lannister has already assured us that we've the proper means to maintain a fire on our own."

Re: Group C- Darcy, Wesley, Daenerys, Loki

[identity profile] taseredagod.livejournal.com 2012-03-05 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fine, no rum. But unless you can prove that you can use an octant accurately, no that either." Said the girl who got lost with a gps.

"We could use the raven, though," Loki replied thoughtfully. Because he was insane.

Or thinking outside the proverbial box on the matter.

Unfortunately for the rest of her group, Firekeeper was a little too busy trying to keep her most recent meal in her stomach to offer any suggestions right away.

She hated boats. Hated them.

Warren bit his cheek and offered Blysse a sympathetic smile. Not throwing up seemed kind of important, he'd let her have her space.

"We're going to need the water," he offered. "Seawater is no good to drink, right? And we can use the container later to collect more, if it rains?"

He tilted his head a little.

"I can fly, so... I mean, presumably, I'd be able to at least get up there and scout around and... I don't know. Use the rope and try to pull the boat toward land, while you guys row?"

"That sounds like it could work," Mercy said very late to the game. "So, water, rope, probably the food..."

Jack was there. And... Not wondering much actually. He was just stunned over Petra's execution for the class exercise.
