Basic Strategy, Monday, Period 4

“I hope you’re all awake after your week off,” Tyrion said cheerfully as he sauntered into the classroom. He had reason to be cheerful; he’d had a full week to explore the mainland with no responsibilities whatsoever. He saw no reason to prolong the idleness by giving students an easy day.

“We’re playing a game today – at least, I think it’s a game, and I’m good at it. We’ve had a bit of time as a group, and now we will be judging each other’s characters.”

He gave that a moment to sink in as he went to the first seat, starting a bag of candy circulating around the room. “Take five pieces each. Don’t eat them just yet. In the game we’re playing, you will pair up – with someone you don’t know well already, please – and tell your partner three things about him or herself that they’ve never directly told you. They can be anything at all – hopes, dreams, fears, ambitions, memories, whatever comes to mind. If you’re right, you get a sweet from them; if you’re wrong, they give you one. The winner is whoever has more candy at the end of the exercise.”

“There are a few principles to remember as you judge each other. First, take a moment and read this.” Done passing around the candy, Tyrion moved on to distribute a handout. He’d done some reading on the game over the weekend, and had been not at all surprised to find it had a name in this world.

“In most studies, people rate the personality description in front of you a four on a scale of one to five. A bit over a four, actually. The trick, of course, is that everyone got the same statement. Most people like to be agreeable. You want to agree with what you’re told about yourself.” He paused, went quieter. “It takes strength to fight it.”

He was back to his usual pace when he spoke again. “Second and similarly, clichés are clichés for a reason. A lot of whores had mothers who did it first; most adventurers were never satisfied at home. The violent usually become that way early. Almost everyone is motivated first by fear, then by love, though money can sometimes trump either. And a great many people either have never satisfied their parents, or – if they’ve found the trick of that – are terrified of one day disappointing them.”

He ran a hand through his hair. “That’s as much guidance as I’ll give you now. If anyone is shy a partner and wants to play opposite me, I look forward to taking your candy. Now, pair up.”

Ben toyed with his candy as he looked around for a partner.

He had faith in his interrogation skills, and had made a promise to himself not to cheat using the Force unless he was losing all of his candy.

Squall sat down, shrugged, and looked Ben up and down.

"Where you come from, people often compare you to your relatives," he decided. "You have power and responsibility that you don't want. You would rather people left you alone."

That was three. Smalltalk was not something Squall was particularly good at.

Firekeeper looked around for a partner, her posture as she did so practically shouting 'bring it on'.

"Hello," Loki said, taking a seat across from her. As you do. Oh, this would go well.

Oh, swimmingly. "Hello, yourself." That meant she expected you to start with the guessing, Loki.

Loki smiled brightly, hands folded on the desk. "I suppose we could start with your upbringing, shall we?"

"You are a fosterling, if we go for the obvious." And obtuse. "But I would say you prefer them to your proper family."

Well, he'd more or less gotten the first part correct. As for the second... it depended on your perspective, she supposed. "What make you say such?"

"Your companion. If you truly embraced your more human relations, you would not have him with you still," Loki replied. "There would be... tension. Stress upon your old connections."

"That is where you is wrong," Firekeeper said smugly. "My 'old connections' as you say is dead. And Blind Seer go where he want. I do not have him."

Seifer was game, and took a seat in front of Mercy. Mostly because going to win all of Squall's candy would be cheating.

Mercy smiled at him. "I'm going to tell you straight out that I'm not sure I'm going to do so well at this."

Read his emotions through scent, sure. This... who could say?

"I doubt I'm going to do well either." Really, he had no idea about most of his classmates.

"How about... you're a good student. You work in town. You took this class because it sounded interesting."

Well, it worked for him!

Mercy passed over one candy, then hesitated. "I am a good student, but I don't work in town. And I didn't get to pick my classes."

She considered for a moment, then passed another one over. "But I would have wanted to take it because it sounded interesting, so I'll give you that one."

Her turn. Darn.

"Um... You think a lot of yourself, probably for good reason. Some things seem to come really easily to you, but maybe not necessarily the things you want. And... you're good at sports - or some sort of athletic thing from where you come from - maybe fighting or something."

Someone had read the handout and was hoping. And well, he was in pretty darn good shape, so...

Seifer made a face and pushed two candies her way. "Well, you're winning so far."

No, he hadn't read the handout, not really.

Jack was there. And possibly just ready to give his candy away because he knows he'd suck at this game.
