The Art of Scrap, Friday, Period 4

Dean was not about to admit in a million years that what had put him so out of sorts last class was not, in fact, a cold, but rather a mild pollen allergy that had been kept under control for the remainder of the week with some quick and easy pharmaceuticals.

Whatever it had been, he had coffee again this week, and he was looking pretty laid-back. It had not been a bad week. And he'd managed to get his head in order enough to be able to ready the classroom for today's lecture. By covering each desk, wall, and every last inch of floorspace in blank newsprint.

"Hello, you know where the coffee is, let's talk color theory," Dean greeted, because he liked to get right the point, sometimes. "You've all probably seen rainbows at some point in your life. The colors of the spectrum, all sorted out neatly into one single strip of color. In that spectrum, you've got your three primary colors, red, yellow, and blue, and then all the rest. Orange, green, indigo, and violet. Colors break off from there, into billions of hues with names like salmon and burnt umber and xanadu and puce. There's no way we'd be able to go through all of them this year, never mind today. But I can give you some pointers for working with them."

Because yes, the junkyard sculptor did some painting whenever the muse hit him, too.

"The easiest way to figure out what colors work well together would be to put them into a color wheel." Dean reached for his desk, picking up a few pots of finger paint, and quickly smeared three wheels onto the paper-coated wall. One had the three primary colors that he'd listed before, the next had the secondary colors as well, with the purple, orange, and green, and the third had all of the above, plus the tertiary hues like yellow-green, and red-orange.

"Now, to find colors that work harmoniously with one another, you can do one of a few things. You can take analogous colors, or ones that rest side-by-side on the wheel, and use them together." He took a blob of yellow paint, and a blob of red, and smeared them on the wheel. And then, in the middle, he mixed the two to make orange. "Or you can go the other way, and use colors that are complementary to one another... or situated on opposite sides of the wheel."

This time he demonstrated by blotting a daub of teal right next to a blob of orange.

"And then there's the ever popular, just saying to hell with the wheel and using combinations found in nature. Because if nature is doing it, why should it be the only cool cat out there, right?" Dean grinned for a moment, and then paused in his grinning to take a mouthful of coffee, heedless of the paint smears he was leaving on his mug. It added personality. "Your assignment for today? Play in the paint. Show me your grasp of color theory with some analogous color combinations, and then some complimentary ones. There are smocks if you need them so that you don't ruin your clothing, or you can roll around in it, whatever. There's more than enough paint for you to be able to keep busy for the rest of class."

Wow. Rapunzel was totally glad she'd braided her hair up for the day. It was still going to be hard to keep it clean, but at least it wouldn't be impossible!

In a lot of ways, it was like going back to her roots. Rapunzel had started with finger painting herself. But the best part? The absolute best part? Dean provided so, so many more colors than she ever had back home. And purer ones, too.

And they all mixed smoothly together!

She was busy swirling color wheel after color wheel just to experiment with allllll the options available.

Claudia was trying to remember what the evil color wheel in the art section of the Warehouse did.

It provided a good distraction from day dreaming about . . . other activities.
