Superheroing 101, Thursday, Period 4

Another week, another class. It was sort of horrifying how Electroclash was finding herself falling into a routine with this thing. Wasn't she supposed to hate it with all her heart and soul?

Eh. The SPA instructions were still a pain in the arse, at least. And she was having to consult them anyway. "Our esteemed friends at the Super Powers Authority," she drawled, once everyone had come in, "have decided to divide this class into ––" Finger quotes. "–– 'thematic subcategories' because that's supposed to make you brats find it easier to learn or something." She wasn't sure if it was working but hey, she didn't care! "So, what your thick skulls are supposed to have learned up until now is superhero basics. Names, costumes, teaming up, all that exhilaratingly fun stuff. Now, we're gonna move on to what I consider to be the most important section of this course, and that's superhero problems."

Of which there were many. Though some of them may have only been problems in her view, but then wasn't encouraging healthy debate supposed to be a good thing for young learners, or some shit like that?

Electroclash leaned back in her chair and mourned not being able to prop her be-gogo-booted feet up on the desk for fear of flashing minors. "And we're going to start off easy because I don't feel like doing a lot of work today." What a surprise. "So, I want you lot to tell me what you think might be some basic superhero problems. And if you get it wrong I will laugh at you but it probably won't affect your grade, so don't worry, suck-ups." She pointed to a student at random. "You. Go first."

[OCD up!]

"There's always going to be someone wanting to earn their badass stripes by taking you down," Kate suggested. The easiest way to get noticed and instill worry in a population was to take out the biggest and most powerful protector. Taking out one person was generally considered simpler than, say, blowing up a building.

"Or by taking down the people close to you," Billy said. "Being a superhero means putting your loved ones in harm's way, if anyone ever finds out who they are."

"Which is why a lot of the ones in my world tend to have secret identities," Stephanie agreed. "The few who don't are really badass."

Looking at you, former-mentor Black Canary.

She frowned. "And of course, the bigger a badass reputation a superhero has, the harder the bad guys'll try to take 'em down, publicly, which means more collateral damage and more innocent bystanders in harm's way . . ."

"And that's just people looking to make a name for themselves," Lex added. "When it's an actual personal grudge, you'd have all the stops being pulled out."

Sure the example Lex was thinking of was Warrior Angel and Devilicus here, but it wasn't like real people couldn't go to the same extremes, look at what happened to people who crossed his dad, who didn't exactly have superpowers.

"It wouldn't be a game or have any time outs to recover from the last time someone attacked you," Tony added. "You'd have to always be on point to survive every time you went out in your... ridiculous costume."

Or suit of armor. SAME DIFFERENCE.

Billy was there, taking notes on the kinds of problems that everyone was coming up with.

Hey, being a nerd and a suck-up hadn't failed him much so far, so he was just going to keep on keeping on.

Billy blinked for a moment at the question, and decided that most likely better than yours was probably not a wise response, no matter how true it might be. "Where I'm from, being ethical and being a superhero pretty much go hand in hand. So, I'd say they're good. Why do you ask?"

Billy looked at the schedule and perked up, grinning at her. "Really? You want me to teach about ethics? I can totally do that," he said. Especially if it meant keeping people from learning the wrong things.

"I don't know if I'd want to teach the whole course." The first day had been nerve-wracking enough and oh god, he was going to have to stand up in front of everyone again, wasn't he? Well, it was too late to back out now. "But I won't let you down on this."

She might laugh at him, but she maybe she wouldn't be disappointed.
