Western Civ Study Session

Janet is running the study session Dr. Pierson mentioned at Friday's class. Which means she's sitting there with her notes and a sign-in sheet and waiting for anyone who wants the extra help to show up.

OOC: About to leave work. Responses will be slow as I'll be offline from about 6:30 - 9:00.

Molly listened to Archie's questions and nodded along, then turned to Janet to see what her answer would be.

"As far as I've been told, you'll have a choice on the subjects." Janet grinned. "I've been trying to narrow my possibilities down, but your essays have to be related somehow to Egypt, Greece, Crete, or Sumeria in the time periods we've covered. I think it's going to be easier than you guys are thinking."

"Egypt, Greece, Crete, or Sumeria," repeated Archie, smiling nervously. "Yes, I suppose that narrows it down somewhat. Perhaps a bit."

He shot Molly a look that might have attempted to be reassuring, but faltered along the way.

Molly was slightly reassured that they wouldn't be blind-sided by something unexpected. Slightly.

She gave Archie an unsure smile in return then turned to Janet. "So, we can pick our essay topics today and figure out what to write?"

"That's what I'm doing," she said. "Want me to flip through my notes and come up with some suggestions?"

"I certainly wouldn't object," said Archie, somewhat abashed.

"Me either," Molly added.

"Hold on, then," said Janet, going back to the start of her notes. "Okay, there's cultural stagnation versus a growing, adapting civilization--in other words, Egypt versus Crete. There's also Crete's seafaring ways and how it affected its culture. There's Egyptian religion, mummification, and the soul. Greek wars, Greek warleaders. Sumeria's contributions to modern culture, such as agriculture, codified laws, and writing."

Janet looked up and grinned. "That's enough to get anybody shell-shocked, right? I know I'm about there, and I know this stuff."

"Oh, dear God," groaned Archie, scribbling all of this down as clearly as he could.

"Don't worry about writing all of it down," said Janet. "Pick three things. Maybe four, just in case you want something extra on hand. I would think you might want to write about Crete's seafaring culture, and possibly the cultural stagnation versus the changing civilization concept. You had a lot to say on that when we covered it in class."

Lyta gave a rueful smile. "I suppose we all have a gift for making things more difficult than they should be."

"Especially when Dr. Pierson is a bit of a know-it-all about the subject," said Janet. She waved at Lyta. "I mean, don't get me wrong, he's incredibly knowledgeable. But he can be intimidating in a classroom setting if you're not used to people like him."

"No worse than Professor Camulus," she replied with a snort. Her smile slipped into a lopsided grin.

Janet rolled her eyes. "No one could be worse than Camulus," she said. "He redefines arrogance."

"I thought that as well. He's certainly... full of himself."

"He's got a--" Janet stopped, put her palms on her desk, and took a deep breath. "I think that if I got started on exactly what I think of him, I probably couldn't stop," said Janet. She grinned wryly. "I tend to be very loudly opinionated sometimes. Are you enjoying the course material in his class, at least?"

To this, Lyta nodded. "It's interesting material, yes. I took an interest in Arthurian stories back when... well, before I came here. He does, at least, know the material."

"I would imagine he would," said Janet. "Arthurian stories are interesting, but I've gotten interested in more ancient cultures. I blame it on--well, a friend of mine from my old school."

OOC: It's getting near bedtime for me, just so you know. :)

"Old school?"

"Colorado Springs High School," said Janet. "I transferred to Fandom High at the start of the school year in September. It took a bit of adjusting at first."

OOC: I swear! I'm going to sleep, really! :)

Lyta had heard of Colorado Springs. She was sure it was a different place -- a different time -- than what Janet referred to, but knew it would be quite different than anything here. "I'll just bet!" she said with a laugh. "I'm used to a lot of strange things, and this is... well, even more unusual."

[And I'm off, too! Night!]

"I think Fandom takes some getting used to, whether you're from a normal school or from someplace strange," said Janet. She grinned. "You made it through the attack of the killer snow monsters, after all, and that was weirder than last semester's zombies."
