Food Tour of Fandom [Mon, Period 2]
Today Bond was lounging on the lawn of an impressive stone building, warm sun beaming down, as his class arrived. He'd had a good weekend off island. A portable coffee cart stood on the landing between the steps, a barista tending to an espresso machine.
"Coffee," Bond began. "Is not just about caffeine, though that is also important. Coffee is about culture, coffee is about being social. As early as the 14th century, coffeehouses were hubs of social activity. Artists, intellectuals, writers, political radicals, all of these gathered in these places. In places with a strong coffee culture, the making and drinking of coffee becomes an important part of everyday life. For example, we're currently in the heart of Melbourne, Australia. The modern Melburnian coffee culture only arose in the 1950s and 1960s, largely as a result of the post-war influx of Italian immigrants, yet within decades became so entrenched that when certain unnamed global corporations attempted to franchise their own version of coffee culture...I'd hesitate to use the phrase abject failure, but it certainly wasn't the grand success they were hoping for."
"But enough talk, enjoy the weather, enjoy the coffee, enjoy each other's company."
