Basic Strategy, Monday, Period 4

As the students took their seats, they would each find a book being rather firmly placed on their desks.

"Books," Tyrion informed them, once he'd finished the process of handing them out, "are the greatest tool there is in sharpening a mind. You may not think you need a sharp mind; perhaps you can get by on charging at things with a sword. And certainly that will work for some of you some of the time. For the rest of the time -- and especially for ensuring you have a properly full mind in a time of crisis -- there's nothing like reading."

"I am aware that there are other ways to obtain and store information on the island, but from what I can tell plain words on paper retain some popularity. Let's stick to those for the day."

"Your assignment is a simple one. Take the book I've handed you at random. Read as much as you can from it in the next half-hour. Then turn to the person next to you and have a discussion about what you read, and how you can see using the information in the future. And, sometime over the next week, pick out a book from the library or bookstore that talks about something you know nothing about, and be prepared to explain it to me when we next meet."

"Blysse, please see me for an alternate assignment."

Dorothy's book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kavadi) was actually quite fascinating. She didn't quite know how it might be useful yet, but she was certainly enjoying learning about the subject.

Ben had never even heard of a median raphe cyst, let alone realized there was enough information to fill about about it...

Petra had the biography of an English artist, which was actually pretty interesting. She liked the examples of his art that were included, which was always a bonus.

She was kind of confused by how the book said he died of asthma in one paragraph and of heart disease in the next, though...

Mercy read all about Jorge Costa Pires (born 1 April 1981 in Amares, Braga), a Portuguese footballer who plays for Portimonense S.C. as a striker.

Wesley's book (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bataipor%C3%A3) was about a town that had supposedly been founded by the king of shoes.

He was starting to doubt this book's credibility.

Karla had gotten lucky; she was eagerly devouring a book about the Boscombe bowmen.

She wasn't sure if this information was useful, but it sure was cool.

Seifer had apparently pissed off an elder god, since his book was about mathematical theorems. Specifically, the Large Set, or Ramsey Theory.

Two pages in he was no longer reading, but he was banging his head on the desk, softly.

Warren had gotten himself a history book about a former vice president from over two centuries ago, and was actually kind of interested in reading about it.

He wasn't quite sure why, but it was the coin that had been minted in his honor, with "EXCELSIOR" written on the reverse side, that interested him the most.

While for the most part Firekeeper was pleased that an alternative had been arranged, there was a tiny, irrational part of her that disliked attention being called to the fact that she lacked a skill most others in the class never really thought about.

Never mind that her inability to read was mostly due to her own stubborn refusal to learn.

"You wish to see me?"

Firekeeper frowned thoughtfully as she tried to puzzle that one out. "Iam not sure of what these words 'sharp mind' mean," she admitted. "Explain."

...Did demanding explanations of things count? Because she certainly did that.

Firekeeper nodded, understanding dawning.

"I watch," she offered. "And listen. A wolf who does not do such is soon a dead wolf."

Perhaps she might be, provided Blind Seer wasn't along, as he tended to be somewhat conspicuous.

"This will do," Firekeeper agreed with a pleased smile.

Loki was there, of course. He did, however, wish he had more books to read than just this one.

A bored Loki was a dangerous thing.
