Newspaper Club, Journalism Room, Monday after classes

As the new staff of the Fandom High Times walked into the Journalism Room after classes, they would find pastries, an ungodly amount of coffee, and Dave, who was drinking an amount of coffee that was only slightly more coffee.

"Hey, everyone. Welcome to the newspaper. If you don't know me, or at least haven't formally met me, I'm Dave Nelson. I'll be your editor, but don't worry, I'll be a fair boss. And if you need anything, anything at all, feel free to come to me. Please don't bother Jaye Tyler, our faculty sponsor. I promised her she wouldn't have to do anything, and I intend to keep that promise."

"As for regular business, I'll keep this short and sweet today. Anyone know what specifically they want to work on for next Monday's paper? If not, I'm sure we can figure something out."

"In the meantime, help yourself to food and coffee. They'll be a weekly staple to keep you coming back," Dave said. He wasn't really joking.

Get to know each other and maybe start getting some notes together.

Sam was working on her horrorscopes. She'd had no idea how hard it would be to come up with twelve different ways to say "you suck and are going to die."

She was maybe going to have to rethink her game plan, here.

"Why a horrorscope?" Darcy asked while trying to come up with a list of people to interview.

Sam shrugged. "I get to make up chiz for everybody's futures. Why not horrorscopes?"

Yep, still no indication that she knew it was traditionally called "horoscopes".

"Are they going to be full of doom and gloom?" Darcy wondered. "And being eaten by a fork man?" Someone didn't watch a lot of horror.

"Well, so far most of them predict death," Sam said. "Fork-who?"

She had a mental image of a giant anthropomorphic evil fork.

. . . Sounded like an iCarly sketch.

"I'm sure there's a movie with a guy with giant forks for hands or something out there." Darcy said, not at all surprised that there were predictions of death in horrorscopes.

Sam considered this. "I want a giant fork," she decided.

Speak up! What do you want to do? Or get Dave to help you come up with something. Or make him give you something. Or just pester him. This is your all-Dave thread, basiclly.

"Can we borrow ideas for columns from old papers?" Darcy asked. "So like, interviews and horoscopes and stuff?"

"Well, Sam has dibs on 'horrorscopes,'" Dave said, choosing to pronounce it Sam's way with only a slight finger quote. "But interviews and stuff are pretty typical. So that's fair game."

Darcy processed the 'horrorscopes' for a few minutes. "Right." She finally said. "So uh, can I just interview the teachers and stuff until I come up with a column or something? Or just do a semester of teacher profiles?" Darcy was just thinking out loud there.

"That's fine by me," Dave said. "But I'd suggest going with teachers who started working here this school year, at least to begin with. Then we know we're covering new ground."

"So my first question is when they starred working here?" Darcy said about 50% seriously.

"Well, that's actually not a bad first question," Dave said. "But I was thinking you could ~~handwavily~~ check with someone in the office to see who was relatively new."

"Oh, I got this," Annie said, scribbling down notes of who she wanted to talk to.

"Have an idea already, Annie?" Dave asked, before drinking some coffee.

"Mm hm," she said happily. "I think it's about time we really looked into just what the school board was thinking by giving a certain teacher a certain class."

Pause.

"Of a similar name."

"Oh, that's great," Dave said. "I mean, we've literally been asked that question every week this year. See where it takes you."

Lucrezia cleared her throat, delicately.

"I have no subject," she confessed. This would not be news to Dave, as she had admitted as much to him when she signed up.

"That's okay, we'll get you one," Dave said. "There's some options open to us, still. Annie and Darcy are going to write about school-related matters, so that may leave a chance to do some kind of profile on a business in the town. If that doesn't interest you, do you have any hobbies that might translate to an article?"

There was an outside shot that Dave might write about knife throwing one of these weeks, for instance.

Lucrezia tilted her head and weighed her options. She doubted that dallying with a stable-boy counted as a hobby, nor would maiming one's husband to keep him out of one's reach.

She considered answering with something innocent, but something compelled her be a bit more forthcoming.

"I observe," she said. "I collect, and I use what I must."

It sounded melodramatic, but so was life in Rome.

"In that case, you're basically a reporter already," Dave said encouragingly. And half jokingly. It was complicated.

When Jaye pings in.

And just to show you all how much Jaye did not want to be bothered, she was playing Tetris on her phone. Did you really want to screw up a Tetris for her? Did you?

I'll try to ping throughout the day if people want/need to talk to Dave. But I'll pretty much be slow until I get home.
