The Club Fair, Gym, Friday Afternoon

For once, Jeremy actually came into the gym on purpose when the club fair was being set up. There was at least one club he knew he wanted to sign up for, after all.

So, he grabbed himself a copy of the club schedule, and set out to explore his options.

Petra's booth was once again tricked out with a few rainbow flags and a giant sparkly banner reading:

Although she had tacked a piece of paper reading 'LGBTQ!' to the corner, and had provided, along with a tray of delicious rainbow cupcakes¹, informational pamphlets on what LGBTQ meant. Never let it be said Petra West could not learn from her mistakes.

She organized her materials meticulously, then sat behind the table with her best welcoming smile and waited.

¹Unlike Karla's delicious cupcakes, these were actually delicious, and Petra would be happy to assure anyone who asked that liking cupcakes was not actually a requirement for membership. She would, however, judge them.

"Am I the only one who didn't make cupcakes?" Annie ~~whined~~ worried when she passed by. "...Those are adorable."

"I don't think so?" Petra asked, looking around. "I think most people skipped food, but I did it last time, so," she shrugged. "They're actually not that hard to make? Just fiddly."

"Are they really a big draw or do you just like doing them?" she wondered. Because if it was like a conversation starter, she was so going to be doing this come... well, college.

"Well, with something like Pride, people can be kind of, you know, nervous about coming to the booth with other people watching or whatever?" Petra asked. "So I thought, you know," she shrugged, "cupcakes give them an excuse. It worked last time."

"They'd really be nervous?"

She said that, but Annie would so be one of the nervous ones if she didn't actually know Petra.

"A lot of kids don't want, you know, people to think they're gay or whatever. Especially the kids who actually are gay, it seems like. It's kind of frustrating," she admitted, "but everyone's got to figure that stuff out for themselves." She grinned. "Cupcakes help."

"Especially cute cupcakes." And because she didn't think she'd ever said it before, "It's really cool that you do this."

Kenzi wandered over and took a cupcake, then asked nonchalantly, "How much trouble would I get in for encouraging Topher to join Pride?"

"I don't really know Topher," Petra said. She'd had a class with him, but. "Isn't he kind of socially awkward?" That was kind of like saying the ocean was kind of wet, but again, Petra didn't really know Topher. "Making anyone come to Pride who doesn't want to be there is going to be counterproductive, though," she warned Kenzi. "Last semester there was that Miley girl with the disguise. That was special.

"Yeah, I know. And I'm not gonna push him. Socially awkward is an understatement." Kenzi started peeling the wrapper off the cupcake. "But he could really use something like this. He's so clueless and talking-about-sex-phobic he keeps messing up talking to guys. Or interacting with them at all. I told him about it, and he said he'd think about stopping by. But I wanted to give you a head's up."

"I don't know, if he's really that bad I don't know if a group thing is going to help him or just freak him out more," Petra said. "It sounds like he needs therapy."

Also an understatement.

"Plus it's not like we actually talk about sex that much or anything, although I want to do some safe-sex workshops or something. Mostly--well, you know, mostly we hang out and eat cupcakes and talk about stuff."

Kenzi was already nomming the cupcake to prove that. After she swallowed a few bites she said, "Yeah, and he's got enough geek friends, I don't think he just needs to meet people. He and Billy kinda flirt sometimes, it's adorable, though. Therapy would help, probably. He's got Asperger's or whatever, and ADD, he's said. So he's kinda hard to take. Thus the getting hit all the time." She took another cupcake bite. "But. If things progress...." If he actually ended up wanting the information, this might be the place to go and not feel weird for still more reasons.
