"Now, as I mentioned, gangs tend to adopt colors, or other means of identification. For discussion today, I'd like you to describe a gang symbol that you have seen, whether in your life or through the media, and discuss why you believe it was or is used by that group."

Homework: Read Community and Institutional Responses to the Youth Gang Problem by Irving A. Spergel and Ron L. Chance.

Sociology of the Paranormal: 6th Period

"Hello, class. Bel, I appreciate your efforts last week, covering the class. I have also recorded all your grades from the quiz."

Grissom then give Marty a sorrowful look. A C-? Woe.

~~*handwave*~~ Grissom launches into a lecture on Out-of-Body Experiences ~~*handwave*~~

"Now unfortunately, I'm not allowed to give you all ketamine or put you through extreme sensory deprivation or a near death experience, so we can't replicate the condition as a lab assignment," Grissom says with a grin, because seriously, drugs are bad and he's obviously kidding.

"However, as out-of-body experiences are far more prevalent than many other types of paranormal activity, if any of you have had these experiences, or know someone who has, I'd like you to share. And if not, I'd ask you to discuss why or why not you believe in the concept."

Homework: Grissom hands out a packet to read for Wednesday. Very. Serious. Reading. ~~Kind of.~~ Also, please bring your jackets and weather appropriate clothes. As long as it doesn't rain, we'll be outside.

Welcome to class.

Phoebe signs in and sits close to the front, and to the door.

Grissom gives Phoebe a slightly concerned look, and asks her silently with his expression if she's okay.

Phoebe tries to smile at Grissom and nods slightly.

Bel signs in and has to pass Phoebe on his way to his seat. He gives her an unreadable look.

After thinking about the assignment, Bel raised his hand and asked Grissom, "Can I show a weapon in class?"

"Ummmmm... well, uhhhh," Grissom doesn't want to know, somedays. "Come over here."

Grissom gestures Bel over to somewhere that not every one can hear, omg. "Weapon?" he asks with a wince in his voice.

Bel held his hand out and a dagger appeared in it. "This," he said, not holding it with any hint of threat. "It's an athame of the Brotherhood. It's, umm, a kind of gang I guess. Was just going to show it, but I don't have to."

Krycek signed in, then gave his example in a vaguely clinical tone. "The KKK, or Ku Klux Klan, uses white robes to denote members, generally accompanied by a face-covering white head-covering with a peak. White is used most likely because of their long-standing advocacy of white - Caucasian - supremacy in the face of an overwhelming majority of non-white and non-Christian US citizens."

"Interesting choice," Grissom says, impressed that Krycek is thinking a little outside of the box. "But a very good example. Thank you."

Piper signs in and tries to think of something interesting to add to the discussion. "I'm pretty sure some gangs use tattoos as a symbol."

Veronica signs in.

"The gang at my old school didn't have any symbol or wear any certain colors," she says.

Draco signs in.

He raises his hand to add to the discussion. "Um...in my world one of the gangs uses a tattoo as a symbol." he says "But not only that, it's magical so it's also used as a way to call the members together."

Peter signed in.

"I saw one gang back home who had a loose kind of uniform. In-line skates, puffy jackets, colored sunglasses, and weird helmets," Peter said. "Kind of a skate punk theme. They probably thought they looked 'extreme' or 'edgy' or something. They really just looked like idiots, especially after they were caught."

Peter smiled when he got to the part about how he caught the idiots. That was a good afternoon.

Aeryn signs in.

"I've never had any experience with gangs," she says. "I don't think I've been here long enough."

Lee signs in.

"I've seen the color red used, probably the color has so many connotations from blood to passion."
