Shop Class [2/6]

As the students enter the Danger Shop, they'll see that Mac has set up what appears to be a long hallway. On a table there by the hallway are an assortment of cleaning products and other goods that you could pick up at your local Kwik Stop.

Yes. There are Twinkies.

"Your assignment today is to come up a way to walk down this hallway. The only trick to this is that there are several security lasers scattered about the hallway at different heights and angles. Your job is to come up with a way to detect the lasers and navigate the hallway without tripping the alarm."

The following Students will have detention this week for missing class more than three times in a row:

John spends a long time thinking about this assignment. Easy way, if the movies are correct, would be to spray in front of him and look for the beam of red.

Deciding to get a little creative, John grabs a lot of Twinkies, some tongs, and duct tape.

Then he steps up to the hallway, puts one Twinkie at the end of his tongs and slowly runs the Twinkie up and down, looking for the beam of red. Upon finding it, he slowly walks over to one side of the doorway and tapes the Twinkie just under where the beam hit the Twinkie so he's got a marker of sorts.

He continues doing that slowly as he goes up the hallway. Soon, there are Twinkies taped all over the walls and John's succesfully made it to the end.

"Nice technique, Crichton," Mac said with an approving tone. "I never thought of the Twinkie technique."

"Thank you, sir." John smiles. "Just don't tell Xander I wasted Twinkies."

John goes about peeling the duct tape off of the Twinkies and tossing them away. Poor Twinkies, alas.

Sam, still trying to figure out what she was going to do, had an idea. "Hey, Crichton? Mind if I use the cardboard from your Twinkies for my assignment?"

"Go for it, Sam." John pushes the cardboard towards her.

"Thanks, John," Sam said, making a little pile out of the cardboard, then lowering her voice and asking, "So, is everyone in your room recovering from the study session?"

"Yeah, think so," John says, lowering his voice as well. "Aeryn finally got some sleep last night, I think. She's been edgy since Friday, hasn't been sleeping."

"Yikes. I can't imagine what would make Aeryn edgy. She's like a rock in emergency...study...situations. I'm glad she finally got some sleep, though." She looked at him with some concern. "And you? How're you doing?"

"I'm fine," John says. "Worried about her is all. And she hates when I worry so, you know how it goes. I'm okay though. Last night was good. We both slept well, I think."

Sam rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I've got one of those of my own, thanks." She wiped her hand off on her pants. "It's good you're sleeping again. But, y'know, if you ever just need to talk it out, feel free to knock on the door. I may throw things at you if you interrupt my train of thought, but it's really nothing personal."

"Will do," John says. "Everything's okay now but who knows what might happen later. And, of course, Valentine's Day is coming up. Haven't even told her what that is yet."

"Funny," John says. "Why don't you explain it to her for me? Girl power and all."

Sam started laughing. "You want me to explain Valentine's Day to Aeryn? John, I didn't even remember it was coming up until you said something."

"If you really don't want to do it, though...I guess I could try and figure out how to explain it to her."

"No, it's okay," John says. "She liked Christmas so maybe she'll like Valentine's Day too. Who knows. I still gotta figure out what to get her."

"Well, there's always the standard chocolate and flowers route," Sam said, as she wondered whether she'd even get that much, "but I think it means more if you get her something that shows her how much you love her and understand her instead. Maybe it's a girl thing."

"Aeryn loves heavy weaponry," John says with a chuckle. "Not sure how I can slip something like into that dorms without getting caught. And, if I go too far, I'm liable to scare her."

"What girl doesn't love heavy weaponry?" Sam grinned. "Maybe that Tex person in town has an idea of what Aeryn'd like? Nothing says I love you like a zat 9 millimeter and a couple of grenades, you know."

"I've gotten her guns before," John admits. "It didn't go over so well. Still not sure what happened there."
