The door, as usual, is closed in order to minimize disruptions from the hallway, and Jenny's got coffee and doughnuts sitting up on her desk by the sign-in sheet. "Today we're going to be talking a bit about Individuation. ~~Yay, Wikipedia! And textbooks saved from college courses.~~ Individuation is also related to developmental psychology, specifically Erik Erikson's psychosocial stages of development, but we'll only be dealing with the concept in relation to analytical psych.

Generally, individuation is the conscious realization of your subconscious personality traits--some people might say your "true self," but I say it's the parts of yourself that are maybe shoved to the side or unexamined. You know? Everyone has them. In the process, you work on both developing your own identity and becoming a whole person. So it's pretty obvious where the term individuation comes from, right?

Couple of vocabulary terms for you guys to know: Egotism is defined here as a realization of your strengths, but a lack of awareness of your weaknesses. Remember, to become a whole person and reduce your subconscious conflicts, you've got to be aware of both. Self-depreciation is the exact opposite--realizing your weaknesses, but ignoring your strengths. Everyone's got both.

So, based on your Myers-Briggs results from our last class session, the one before the quiz, gimme an idea of both how you feel about the concept of individuation in general, and how it applies to yourself."

OOC: I do not have webmail access during the day; the only address I have access to is my work e-mail (which, for obvious reasons, I don't have LJ comment notifications going to). I'll check it at least once every morning; however. When I get home at night, I don't log onto LJ or e-mail until after my son has been put to bed around 7:30 or 8 CST (on most nights; however, there are a few exceptions). My IM is in my userinfo and I'll make a point of being accessible on it when I'm at home and online. Tuesday nights I am generally inaccessible; I might be online after my dance lesson, but I need at least one night for non-FH time. Luckily, none of Jenny's classes are run on Tuesdays.

Angel squirmed uncomfortably. After the lectures he'd gotten from Parker and Callisto, this topic was hitting a wee bit close to home.

"But what about if you can't become a whole person?" Angel asked, feeling in no way defensive, oh no. "Some of us not only can't, but have to fight to make sure it never happens."

~~Jenny's player certainly hadn't cackled gleefully when thinking about Angel as she typed up the lesson from her notes. But only because she was at work and they frown upon evil cackling there.~~

"I'd argue that Angelus is nothing like a whole person," said Jenny. "And without a soul, does he really have the possibility of the self-awareness necessary to individuate? Is it even possible for him to individuate. Do demons change?" She paused. "Angelus is a big weakness of yours. But can you shut away all awareness of him and still be a whole person yourself? Notice I don't say to express the guy's oh-so-fun habits. Just awareness of him and the personality traits the guy's got."

Oh yeah. Un! Comfortable! ~~Which is why his player is also cackling with glee.~~

"Angelus knew who and what he was," Angel said. "Just because he doesn't feel what others do doesn't mean he couldn't be whole in himself. I don't get that. I've got to keep him as locked up as I can or people die."

Egotism? Angel? The heck you say.

"Sounds like you think you've got it all sewn up," said Jenny calmly. "So what there are no aspects of your personality and his that are at all similar? Nothing about yourself that you're maybe locking up there too?"

Gosh, Angel and egotism? No! It'd be like saying Jenny was all about the self-deprecation when it comes to her level of magical ability.

"Doesn't matter," Angel said. "If it's his, it's gone. Or should be."

Anakin was listening just a little too intently to the conversation Angel and Professor Calendar were having.

Not that he had anything like this of his own to deal with.

Nope, no demons.

Only a dark little voice that must be ignored.

Entirely different.
