History of Art / Studio Art Combined Studio | Feb 3, Periods 5&6

At students entered they might have noticed that three of the classroom walls were covered with still damp plaster, and paints and extra buckets of plaster were set up near each wall. There are also a number of books on Roman fresco painting, in particular that of Pompeii. (Warning: links lead to not particulary NWS images)

"Frescoes were a very common form of Roman art. A fresco is when you paint directly onto still wet lime mortar or plaster so that the paint soaks into the wall as they both dry. Today, you get to make one.

"I've divided you up into three groups, each group will take one wall to paint on, choose your subject from the books provided.

"While you will all help paint your fresco, the History of Art students will be responsible for choice of subject matter, and the Studio Art students for directing your artistic efforts. You haven't much time so get started as quickly as possible."

"A hero with father issues, that's normal. I'm more tickled at the hero with mother issues, gods," Lee says.

"True. Usually moms get the shaft." Angel blinked. "Um. You know what I mean."

"Actually, that sort of pisses me off, you know? Moms are very important to their sons and in the hero cycle, it's only about father and son angst and the mother is hardly mentioned. And if she IS, it's about him having odd sexual tension with her or something," he rants.

"They need better PR agents," Angel agreed.

"Also, mothers are often painted as evil. Take Isolde's mother -- she gives Isolde the love potion for the journey which Tristan and Isolde "accidentally" drink and look what happened to those two schmucks."

"It's a bum rap anyway," Angel said. "She was being sent off to marry a guy for all the right reasons. Why not throw a love spell into the mix so she enjoys herself? Not the mother's fault Tristan and Isolde can't read a label."

"Would a warrior and a princess be literate in those days, however?" Lee wonders.

"Probably not," Angel admitted. "But they can't have a heart picture?"

"But that would be too obvious. Plus, I don't know if the symbol of a heart as we know it today was used back in the Dark Ages of Ireland and...and...that bloody country," Lee suggests.

Bridge has no idea what Angel and Lee are talking about.

"We ready to paint yet?" he asks, trying to peer over Angel's shoulder at the sketch.

Lee shrugs and grins at Bridge. "Sure, let's get this finished."
