Political Campaigning (Thursday, February 2, 4th period)

Josh was still a little distracted by the continuing coverage of the State of the Union and kept glancing at his copy of the speech transcript and frowning.

"Okay. Tuesday night's speech pretty much gives you a blueprint of the issues that the Republicans will be running on this year: Iraq, terrorism, education, health care, permanent tax cuts, and, apparently, banning human-animal hybrids." Josh rolled his eyes. "Maybe that's a huge issue in Montana or something."

He smacked the top of his desk. "Except for not. Today we talk about local issues."

He pointed at the stack of newspapers on his desk. "Some of the big things in Montana right now: the Abramhoff scandal--bad news for the Burns people--Iraq, farming issues, snow mobiles--learn to care about that--, wolves potentially coming off the endangered list, unemployment rates on the reservations."

He waved his hands at the class. "Discuss among yourselves. Which national issues will you take from the Republican platform, if you're working for Burns, or work to counter, if you're Morrison and Tester? Learn about wolves." He gave an evil smile. "Extra credit will be given to anyone who asks CJ Cregg about Plumie." He sat back down. "Divide into your usual groups." He snapped his fingers. "Oh, um, Donna--" he pointed at Jake--"how many days until the election?"

"I have one other thing to ask you about." She handed over the plans, and folded her arms. "Logan. Why is he in on this, again?"

"Going to assume you don't mean this class?"

Parker gave him a don't be stupider than you really are look and said, "The party. Why do we need him? And if we don't need him, why is he going? Cam I get, his idea, his party, hard to push him out. Even though I worry about him too. He's not exactly mosh pit material. But Logan? What the hell?"

"He knows how to handle himself," Angel replied.

"I know he can shoot; he did okay last weekend. But I think I can take Echolls in a fight. Isn't there someone else, someone more experienced, you could have asked along?" Parker rubbed the bridge of her nose.

"Someone at this school who I know for damned certain can take on a strong, pure evil vampire in a fight and not back down. Huh." Angel made a show of rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Hang on. I'm having a hard time picturing this."

Parker took back the blueprints and whapped him on the head with them. "I don't care, because, keep in mind he almost died. Hello! Molly saved his ass from Darla! He just got over that last week! In terms of emotional stability, he's got as much credibility as Rory, and in physical, he's not much better off. Tell me he's been training. Tell me he won't get his ass kicked again. Tell me something that won't make me think he's along 'cause he's your best buddy now."

Now Angel's expression was utterly serious. "I'm not bringing anybody along to die."

Parker studied him for a long second, then handed him the blueprints back. "You better not be. I know you've slipped into de facto Fearless Leader mode. Keep in mind, that doesn't make us your minions. In strength or attitude." She sighed. "Whatever. It had to be said."

"Never mistake you for a minion, Parker," Angel said. He folded the blueprints up into his bag and got ready to go.

"At least you haven't regressed that far," Parker muttered as Angel went in one direction, and she went in the other.

Still. Better give him that vocabulary test before they left tomorrow. Just to be sure.
