There's soda, Twinkies and steaming pots of Chinese food on the table. The food is quite possibly straight from China. Who knows? Also present are cutlery, plates and chopsticks for those who are game enough to try.

On the board, there is a list of 12 places.

Aerelon
Aquaria
Canceron
Caprica
Gemenon
Leonis
Libra
Picon
Sagittaron
Scorpia
Tauron
Virgon

"Today we're gonna learn about the Twelve Colonies, dudes. There are some students who are from the Colonies, like Lil' Pouty Babe. Anyway, last week with the Republic we saw how the dudes from all over the place who had all different types of music even though they were all from the Republic. Today we're looking at a bunch of dudes from 12 different planets who all have something in common.

The music from the Colonies changes depending what planet you go to, like there's this most triumphant glockenspiel player on Gemenon, only they don't call it a glockenspiel, they call it something else I don't remember. And the glockenspiel doesn't have *any* corners, dudes. All of the corners are gone. That's some excellent health and safety work right there." Ted paused. "Uh, anyway, so you've got that glockenspiel player on Gemenon, but on Virgon you've got what's like a rock band, only with weird instruments that don't have corners either.

There are different types of music on each colony and even within each colony there's a bunch of different types of music. There's a lot of music there, dudes. For real. The thing is, even though these dudes think of themselves as coming from different places, they all have one thing in common - percussion. These dudes love to use drum beats in their music."

Discussion: "Today's talky topic thing has two parts. Why did these dudes end up using the same thing - percussion - in almost all of their music? Was it magic? Do you think there was some law saying they had to? Some other more likely reason? And two, why do you think these dudes like beating the crap out of drums so much?

Harry waves back, glad to see someone familiar. "How's your interview assignment going?" he asks when Ted is busy eating Twinkies doing something else.

Jessica smiles, glad to see someone glad to see her.

"Oh, I just don't know Harry. I mean I just can not bring myself to bother someone to do an interview. You see I don't know a terrible amount of people, and even those I haven't know for a terribly long amount of time, so you see I just can not bring myself to bother them, you see?"

"I see" Harru smiles at her repeating the phrase. "I don't think they would see it as being bothered by you, though. Most people would be very willing to talk a bit about the music in their hometown, and not feel like you're bothering them at all" Harry smiles, hoping to encourage her a bit.

"Maybe it's kind of tradition? Like, they're just so used to it they can't imagine music without percussion."

"Percussion's very basic and primal to music. It echos the rhythms of life: the heartbeat, breathing, the cycle of seasons. Or it can be used to replicate those great clashes, like thunderstorms. And it's not too difficult to figure out--not every culture invented brass instruments, but most of them have percussion. So it makes sense that the Colonials would have a lot of it. Even spread out over twelve planets, it's something they can hold in common."

That sounded cool. "What Zero said."

Re: Discussion

[identity profile] bridge-carson.livejournal.com 2006-02-02 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Bridge pondered the question. "Did they all come from the same place, maybe, originally? And they took their music from their homeland- or, well, home planet- with them when they spread out to twelve planets?"

Re: Discussion

[identity profile] conathon.livejournal.com 2006-02-02 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Maybe they have anger issues."

Re: Discussion

[identity profile] cyclopeanmerc.livejournal.com 2006-02-02 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well," Pip said, "percussion is a vital part of music in general, ya know? Everything has a beat or a rythem to it. It's something primal in us, I guess. Maybe realted to the human heart beat? That would make sense, at least to me."

"I think all men in general just enjoy beating the crap out of things, especially if the object makes cool sounds when they do it." Chloe nods.
