Journalistic Integrity (Wednesday, February 1 - 6th period)

Rita was distractedly reading a newspaper with moving photographs when the students filed in. She smiled at them over the top of it, and flipped the paper down, setting it on her desk.

Observant students might notice the singe marks or ashes on said desk.

"Today, we talk about actors. Musicians. Artists. People who specifically choose a career that puts them in the limelight. Is the press wrong for tailing these people? Wrong for finding out as much as possible about them and sharing with the public? They've put their lives up for grabs, after all."

Her smile widened. "Discuss."

"There you go, proving my point," Callisto said. "As a famous reporter, your life is just as open to public examination as any other celebrity, and by your own logic, that of your family as well, even if you do try to conceal your husband's very existence."

"If I had a husband, I'd tell you all about him. Would you like to hear about my actual family, rather than the one that lives in John Crichton's imagination?" Rita asked.

"There is no Wilbur. There is no love. I'm not bloody married," Rita scowled.

"I can understand why you feel the need for such extreme measures, after all you of all people know the lengths the press go to to tear into those loved by public figures, but Wilbur Rufus Skeeter is a fine man, who deserves better than to be ignored in this manner."

"I think you're right Krycek," Callisto nodded. "Cleary her love for him is so great that she feels the only way to survive being seperated for his safety is to pretend he doesn't exist."

Callisto looked shocked. "Krycek, you don't think Wilbur is actually...Wilberta?"

Krycek's eyes widened. "Scandalous," he said slowly, as if piecing it together. "Then Ms Skeeter would have no choice but to cover for her lover, who would be torn apart by the sharks in the journalistic media."

"Oh, for Merlin's sake," Rita muttered. "Not married. Not a lesbian. I'm simply an unmarried woman, you twits."

Callisto nodded as if it all made perfect sense now. "After all, people in the outside world have much less enlightened views about alternate sexualities than those of us here in Fandom."

"Necessitating the distance Ms Skeeter puts between them, in order to allow her some semblance of a normal life, despite the love they wish to share and treasure in peace and quiet." Krycek pursed his lips and looked rather sympathetic.

"Alex, would you like to talk to the class about this darling little Jake of yours?" Rita asked with a smirk.

"The course of true love never did run smooth Krycek," Callisto shook her head. "Obviously a jealous colleage threatened to out Professor Skeeter and Wilberta, precipitating her taking up this teaching positions."

Ignoring the mention of Jake, Krycek nodded, feigning concern. "Far, far away from those who knew her previously. A fresh start, as it were, but not taking a chance with it being found out again - so poor Wilberta finds herself languishing, waiting, loving from afar." He seemed entirely serious, really.

Rita smiled.

"So, if you don't want to talk about your boyfriends, that's very sad. How do you feel about each other, Alex, Callistie?"
