Sociology of the Paranormal - 6th Period - February 1

Bel got to the classroom early and was waiting for his fellow students when they arrived. He handed back the quizzes as they came in with the following grades:

Lyta Alexander B
Marty Blank C-
J.C. Broots A-
Angela Chase B+
Cordelia Chase B
Walter Dornez A
Jake Gavin B+
Piper Halliwell B
Phoebe Halliwell C
Lana Lang A
Cindy MacKenzie B
Paige Matthews B
Mystique A
John Sheppard A
Stark A-
Jessica Tate A-
Jaye Tyler B
Rose Tyler B

When everyone had settled in, he said, "Dr. Grissom is still away, so today we'll be discussing the assignment I gave on Monday. Tell the class about a paranormal event that happened in your own world or at Fandom High, and how it was or could be explained away as something normal. Give me your written essay at the end of class."

"Where I come from they just kind of pretend it didn't happen. Which can get weird with so much strange stuff going on. It's like everyone refuses to mention the giant elephant in the living room in the hopes that if they ignore it it will just go away."

Angela tilts her head to one side. "Do you think they might actually not see it? I mean, something weird happens, but they can't deal with the weird part, so they just block it out?"

"I suppose. But his mother ended up dead and he left an aweful lot of destruction in his wake... And some of them have actually been caught on tape doing things. But overall, it's just not mentioned."

"Weird. Maybe it's just too hard to acknowledge, somehow. You know, you don't want to wreck your nice normal life by talking about meteor freaks."

"Yeah, I think that's part of it. It's not like people don't know what's going on." Lana shrugs.

Instead of participating in class, Marty chose to just give evil looks at the TA.

Angela would probably glare at both of them, but she's really, really trying to ignore them. A lot.

"Sometimes cover isn't really necessary. Sometimes, you can just let the mind fill in the gaps, and it provides a better cover story than you could," Lyta said. "The mind can only handle so much reality before it starts...seeking out fanciful explanations."

Phoebe doesn't take part in the discussion. In fact, she never says a word.

"Weird things are easy to cover up. People don't want to believe in things that might threaten their everyday lives."

"Sometimes people don't want to acknowledge weird things because they can't handle it," Piper said tiredly.

"Sometimes they said it was hallucinations. Or just that I the person who saw things was crazy."

Shep mutters something like, "We usually used a canvas sack for Rodney... oh, wait, that's someone weird."

Mac shrugs, "I tried to explain away the amazing flying twinkies to my room-mate by convincing her she was imagining it. That didn't really work though." She then goes quiet, "that also probably doesn't count huh?"

Cordy doesn't look very enthusiastic. "Most people refused to believe it was happenning. Vampire attack, girls missing, crazy horned demons? Nah, you didn't see that. You're just tired, go to bed."

Cordy may have glared at Bel when talking about the demon bit.

And Cordy may have discretely stuck a tongue out at him.

Animals talking to her is just too easy.

"I accidentally killed an abominable snowman with a glitter flag this weekend," Jaye offers. "You can't tell me that's normal."

Paige really doesn't want to talk about this, in fact she doesn't even want to think about it.

"Erm there was a thing with what I'm pretty sure were demons over the holidays, they looked human and we thought we were just being mugged at first, so erm I guess that's how demon attacks could be covered up."

Yeah she's not gonna go into anymore details.

Broots decided that mentioning Miss Parker's mother's murder would probably end with him dead so instead he sort of mumbled something about Zombies.
