Forensics (5th Period)

"Good afternoon, everyone. Today, we're going to be looking racial trends in homicide."

She passes around a handout.

"Once you've had a minute to look over that, I want you to answer the following questions."

1) Why are blacks more likely to be murdered than whites in the United States?
2) Why are there more blacks in prison than whites?
3) Does the judicial system seem overly biased?

"Afterwards, we're also going to take a look at ethics in regards to homicide. For homework, I want you to read the article I'm passing around now and critique it. We'll discuss how ethics and race can play into forensics on Friday."

Phoebe signs in and looks...very pale and worried about something. She gets right to studying.

Lana signs in and thinks about the assigned questions. The best she comes up with is that it has to do with a lower socio-economic level which has also been associated with increased murders and prison time. She's not sure if the system is biased or not.

She notices Phoebe seems... off and smiles at her and slides her a note when Ms. Sidle isn't looking.

Everything okay? You know I'm always willing to listen if you want to talk.

Phoebe's eyes fill with tears and she slides a note back, careful not to annoy Sara.

Apparently, I'm engaged.

Lana looked at her in shock. "What?" she mouthed, then passed back another note.

Did you and Bel make up?

"What?!" Lana says out loud, unable to stop herself. "Sorry, Ms. Sidle."

She slips Phoebe another note.

We have to talk after class!

It took Macbeth a good deal of consideration before he could manage some half-arsed answers to the questions that were presented to him, but he finally managed to write down what he believed were perfectly valid answers.

1) Perhaps they hold some sort of position in the natural hierarchy than people of other colours, and so they are in the greatest danger of being murdered as someone else competes for power?
2) ... Are they the ones who want the power?
3) It cannot possibly be as biased as the system from where I came from. The death penalty is was quite commonplaced, there.

And then he paid close attention to that ethics part... because he needed all the education in ethics that he could get.
