Tactics of War [Monday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.]

Eighth strode into class, wrote the assignment on the board, stationed a few replicators to watch the students, and sat her desk, motionless as she sekritly communed with her agitated brethren who were warring on a far away galaxy.



Please look over your handout from last time, pair up or make groups of three or four – as you wish – and share with your classmates your three favorite war tactics. I will be recording your conversations, no need to turn anything in. If you have any questions, speak to your TA, Callisto. If you need me for any particular reason, however, I will be available after class for questions.

"Two small attack groups, versus a larger force. The larger force has two experienced commanders and a ton of stupider minions. The attack groups are smarter, but haven't worked together, and aren't as familiar with the terrain. They have superior firepower but less physical advantages. Can you think of an edge, or a mode of attack, that would definitely allow them the greatest odds of survival and victory, in an attmempt to cut down the numbers, and possibly take otu the commanders of the larger force?" Parker looked hopeful, and bit her lip as she shifted her weight. Hey, might as well ask the expert....

She processes the data for a moment before saying:

“What an interesting dilemma, Miss Parker.

I’d figure out a way to debilitate one – or both – of the experienced commanders before the onslaught begins in the first place. An army is only as good as its commander and if you weaken the mastermind, you weaken the army as a whole.

Concerning the brute force that this theoretical army of good is facing, if they could devise a weapon that could take them out faster – that could even the odds a little better. A small attack force, no matter how impressive, can be overtaken by large numbers if the tactics aren’t played just right.

Also, I’m fond of diversions. If you distract either the main commanders or the brute force by something nice and delicious, you can take them by surprise.”

"Delicious," Parker repeats, eyes widening, then nods, looking happy at the mention of weapons. "Thank you, Dr. Carter. That's really helpful-- I mean, I think you've given me some food for thought." She grinned. "Incidentally, is extra credit available for this class?"

"Incidentally, there is, Miss Parker," she says, suspiciously.

"Good to know. I may have a -- report, to turn in, for evaluation next week. On a group mock exercise." Parker smiled. "But I'll let you be the judge of its worth, Dr. Carter."
