Tactics of War [Monday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.]

Eighth strode into class, wrote the assignment on the board, stationed a few replicators to watch the students, and sat her desk, motionless as she sekritly communed with her agitated brethren who were warring on a far away galaxy.

Please look over your handout from last time, pair up or make groups of three or four – as you wish – and share with your classmates your three favorite war tactics. I will be recording your conversations, no need to turn anything in. If you have any questions, speak to your TA, Callisto. If you need me for any particular reason, however, I will be available after class for questions.

[[They’re keeping me riiiiiiiiiiidiculously late at work today (woe), I apologize for the lateness of this post and the lack of awesome it entails.]]

Ivanova is making a very strong effort not to limp as she walks into class. She smiles a little bit at the guy she doesn't know as she carefully lowers herself into a chair. "Hey. Ivanova. Want to talk tactics?"

"'Course," Pip says. "Pip Bernadette, by the way," he adds, reaching out his left hand. His right is hanging in a sling.

Sam sat down with the rest of the walking wounded. "Hey. Mind if I join you guys?" She offered her hand. "Sam Carter."

"No problem," Pip answered. He reached out with his left hand.

"So, what got you guys?" Sam asked, shaking his hand.

Ivanova extends her own left hand, gratefully she didn't actually have to move the other. Her right arm should have been in a sling, if she would let anyone look at her shoulder. "Good to meet you. Saw some action this weekend, I take it."

Pip grimaced. "Yeah, you might say that. I got grabbed by the guy handing out food and ended up defending some back exit." He shrugged, then winced.

Ivanova nodded. Her neck was about the only thing that didn't hurt. "I was in front of the gym. Took a tentacle to the gut and ended up with a concussion when I was flung against a wall." She nods at Carter. "Take a seat. Tell some battle stories."

"Snow sharks have really sharp teeth. And watch out for falling coffee cups." She rubbed the back of her head gingerly.

Ivanova grinned and chuckled. "I think you win." She winced, the grin disappearing. "Ow. Laughing hurts."

Pip laughed. "Guy I was fighting with got away with only a couple of bruised ribs. Which reminds me. My first favorite tactic. Deception."

Ivanova wiggled her fingers (but only on the left) in an action which would vaguely indicate ninja-like powers of concealment. "I was always fond of diversions and distractions."

Sam grinned, thinking of Shep. "I'm a big fan of using the element of surprise, myself."

Just then, a small origami crane fluttered out of Ivanova's back and perched on her shoulder. Ivanova smiled. "Surprise." She glanced back over the handout, snorting. "'Exploiting prevailing weather'. If only we could have done that this weekend."

Pip nodded. "Suprise is killer in a fight. Seconds of distraction can be turned into minutes of distraction and confusion. Never underestimate the power of suprise."

Sam blinked a couple of times at the origami crane. "Does creativity count as a tactic? Because I think impulsive ~~stupidity~~ brainstorms can lead to unpredictable battle tactics, making them more difficult to counter."

"What's that old saying, about the master fearing the beginning because of the unpredictability of their moves?" She frowned. "Maybe it was just in a movie I saw once." The crane fluttered a bit and she absently tapped its wee paper beak fondly.

"I'll believe it," Pip said. "Though my friend recently got his ass handed to him by the man who is now his tutor. Though I guess my friend isn't exactly a beginner."

A replicator scampered under Pip's desk, crawling towards Sam's crutches.

Sam noticed the replicator, and tried to unobtrusively slam the base of her crutch down on top of it as hard as she could, like it was a cockroach.

The replicator screeches as not-Her attacks so brutally. Perhaps eating those large metal things is not the best idea. It scampers away, whirring angrily at being slightly crumpled.

Ivanova glanced under the desk at the screech. "What the heck was that?"

Sam felt strangely triumphant for someone who had just beat up a small metallic alien lifeform.

Pip coughs. "So, tactics?"

"Right, tactics." Sam stretched out her leg. "If we're overwhelmed, I'd have to actually start with negotiation, unless there's a lot of firepower to spare."
