Sociology of Violence - 2nd Period - [1/30]

After waking up to a phone call from Dr. Grissom asking her to cover classes this week, Veronica hastily checked her email for the info she missed from the last class and came up with vague lesson plans.

When everyone had arrived for class, she said, "Dr. Grissom won't be in this week. As a follow up to Wednesday's class, today we're going to talk about possible hate crimes that could happen here at Fandom High and how we can prevent them.

And for Wednesday's class, your assignment is to research recent hate crimes in the news and come prepared to discuss one."

"The current anti-vampire mood could easily turn into a hate-fest on Angel," Lee suggests. "I doubt that this will happen as he's proven himself to be above the morals of his kind, but ... he is still a vampire."

"We as a group could provide a good social example of being friendly with Angel, indicating to any new students that he's one of us, not one of them," Lee suggests, not realizing how pompous that kinda sounds.

Aeryn could say a few things on the subject. Except she's so not. Because there's no way to translate that into studying metaphors.

Lee sees Aeryn and gestures politely to her. "For example, Angel is rooming with Aeryn's boyfriend, John. And by the fact that Aeryn hasn't eviscerated him kinda proves that Angel’s okay. That still doesn’t protect him from being a target of some kind of hate crime, however."

"True!" Lee says, "I never thought of that. People could possibly assume that Aeryn is more than she seems because of her connection to Angel. She - well hell, many of us this room - could be branded as "dirty vampire lovers" due to our amicable relationships with Angel."

"There also could be hate crimes committed against any aliens we have at Fandom purely from the standpoint that they're different. ... but I think all of us students from other planets are human," he suggests.

Phoebe doesn't contribute anything to the conversatin. In fact, she doesn't say anything at all the entire class.

"Technically, I suppose the recent gremlin extermination could be considered a hate crime," Peter offered. "They were sentient creatures, apparently with enough intelligence to set fairly complex traps for people, and then they were were just about all wiped out in one fell swoop."

"Even if they were a menace, does that justify the extermination of a sentient species?" Peter asked.

Honestly, he was just playing devil's advocate. Fandom seemed to be a tolerant enough place to him that he had trouble thinking of any other likely hate crimes.
