Influence, Persuasion, and Manipulation

301--3rd period

Now today we're going to get into talking about persuasion. The excellent text
Influence by Robert Cialdini will be our guide. Now, can anyone tell me to what
ends we use persuasion most effectively in our day to day lives?

Discussion is the core of your grade, gang. So talk.

"It's creepy to think that people can manipulate each other so easily," Allie says.

Elizabeth read through the research, frowning.

"It's not surprising," she replies. "One can argue that to a certain extent, we're being manipulated to stay in school, with the knowledge that if we quit, we'll be hampered by the lack of a high school diploma."

"Well, not to everyone, no. There are people who genuinely enjoy learning.

But the society which has been created is one which places your formal education as paramount performance, and it's something that will affect you for the rest of your life. And in that respect, it's society itself that manipulates you."

"I don't think it's necessarily a manipulation," Allie says. "It all depends on what you want to do with your life. If you have no ambition to be anything that requires learning, then you don't really need the diploma. But you're not going to get into med school without it."

"When you look at it spelled out like this, it seems like nobody should be able to fall for this stuff. It seems like it ought to be obvious that you're being manipulated. So how come people fall for it?"
