Journalism 101/201 (Friday, January 25 - 5th period)

"Good afternoon, boys and girls."

Rita smiled at her class, sipping a cup of tea.

"Today I'd like you to share with the class what source you've brought in, and why. Sort of a show and tell, if you will. Who would like to go first?"

Peter signed in. He seemed to really concentrate on signing in. Dude has focus liek whoa today.

Draco holds up a Daily Prophet article that said "ENQUIRY AT IMPROPER USE OF MAGIC OFFICE"

"This is an article from a few years back that I saved. It's about a man who worked at the Ministry who charmed a car into flying." he says "I find it disgusting how some wizards think it's funny to abuse muggles. I thought Arthur Weasley should have been sent to Azkaban for that."

Rita nodded firmly. "I remember that incident quite well. The Weasleys get entirely too much leeway, in my opinion."

Anakin lifted Jedi Philosophy: An Overview onto the top of his desk. He flipped to a page he had bookmarked "This is a book from the library here that gives, well, a general overview of the philosophies and rules of my order." He looked distictly unhappy. "Including the part where I'm not allowed to date anyone."

He flipped the book open and read, "A Jedi shall not know anger. Nor hatred. Nor love." He closed the book and tried not to glare. "It sounds a bit like a holo tagline, I know, but it's part of our code."

"Mm." Rita arched a brow. "Just because one cannot act on them, it does not mean that one might not have...impulses, Mr. Skywalker."

Anakin had absolutely no interested in talking to this woman about any...impulses he might have.

But he had to remain diplomatic.

If he could remember how.

"But if the impulses remain unacted on, they remain hypothetical. Conclusions cannot be drawn without evidence," he said.

"And likewise, they can't be disproven," Rita pointed out.

Anakin decided that shouting "I'm not gay!" at her wasn't the most effective strategy.

Even if it would make him feel better.

"It appears we're at an impasse," he said. "Because I can't think of any further proof that I would be willing to give to prove my side of the story. I guess that leaves you with speculation, and speculation without backup evidence can't be printed, can it? Where I come from I think that's what the standard is, anyway."

"Speculation can be printed as long as it's not presented as fact," Rita said with a smug smile. "It's not libel unless it's presented as conclusive and evidenced. Opinion is allowed in this country."

"Does it have to be marked as opinion?" Anakin asked faintly.

Damn and blast.

"Generally," Rita sighed.

Anakin grinned ~~because he's occasionally an idiot~~.

"Then I guess I win. Speculation marked as such without anything to back it up will be forgotten about."

"Yes, I'm sure Ms. Gilmore agrees with you," Rita said. "Given how that nickname has spread like wildfire."

Anakin's cheeks went red.

Could be the nickname. Could be that he was just totally checkmated in his argument. It's hard to tell.

"Point," he muttered, refusing to make eye contact with anyone.

"Checkmate, Mr. Skywalker," Rita smiled, tilting her head sweetly. "Better luck next time."

Anakin might hate Professor Skeeter a little bit now.

Peter held up a printout of an article from the Daily Bugle. The headline read "AMERICAN KINGPIN OF CRIME CAUGHT RED-HANDED ON TAPE: WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN."

"This is an article from about a year ago. A businessman by the name of Wilson Fisk - who pretty much everyone knew was a big, fat mob boss - was caught on tape murdering a man. This tape somehow got leaked to the press ~~thanks to me~~ and he fled the country. Sure, he wasn't caught, but good was done. Temporarily."

He placed that article down and held up another. "KINGPIN CLEARED: Questionable evidence deemed fraud/inadmissable."

"This is an article from three months later. Fisk bought his way out of trouble, came back to America, and went on with his criminal ways and nobody batted an eye. This seems terribly wrong to me, but if it weren't for powerful people weaseling their way out of trouble then I guess I'd be a very bored person with nothing really important to rage about."

"Uh huh," Rita said thoughtfully. "What do you mean, he was 'caught on tape'?"

"Security footage from his building very clearly showed him committing the crime," Peter explained. "~~Also, I saw it. I'm totally a first-hand source.~~ I have no clue how the press got it, but it was in frame and everything. Some people like their security too much, I think. Kinda screwed him over a little there."

Quinn holds up an issue of Waif magazine, and turns to the article with the headline reading "HOW DO DEAL WITH YOUR EX'S NEW GF".

"It interviews Stephanie, who had this whoooole big thing when she broke up with her boyfriend and how the girlfriend after her totally harassed her just because she made a couple phone calls to check up on him," Quinn nods. "It's a tell-all."
