Classics, 1/23, 3rd period
"Hello, class. My absence last Wednesday was unavoidable; I trust it has not caused problems for you in your studies.
I had asked for you to read The Odyssey over the weekend; in case your vocabulary was insufficient to the Greek, or your time insufficient to the reading, I am now passing out a synopsis.
Your question for the day is this: Odysseus suffered greatly during his journey homeward. Was the suffering the result of choices he made, or was it unavoidable? How can we determine which is which?
We will conclude this unit with a quiz on Wednesday."

"Some things could have been avoided. If Odysseus had told th' crew right upfront about Aeolus baggin' the' storm winds, they'd of believed him an' left it alone. Instead, he keeps it secret, leavin' them ta fall t'their curiosity an' greed. That mess hadn't happened, they'd of been home with little hassle in comparison."

"I kind of think it was a combination of both. All that time being gone, and the stuff that happened to his family back home, well, he couldn't do anything about that. But for the things that happened to him? I think some of that was 'cause of things he chose to do. I mean, sometimes the people you get stuck with, that's not your choice. But how you deal with them is." He looks slightly guilty. "And sometimes you don't always make the best choices 'cause your pride's in the way, or your reputation, or something like that. And Odysseus had a pretty big rep to live up to. They kept calling him tricky, or wily, or something like that, I think? Yeah."
