Thank you to the few students who showed for classes, and I will expect the rest of you who have now signed up to be present at all future classes. I understand there have been scheduling problems and that many were no aware of the fact that there were mathematics courses. In class today all we did was review the syllabus and share names and interests in the field.

Could those students who showed today please repeat themselves under the appropriate comment section, as well as all new students. Fortunately, enough students have signed up that ALL classes will in fact be continuing in the future (although if anyone is interested in Advanced Theory: Literature and Art, I would greatly encourage you to join).

Class-specific syllabi will be passed out later in the week. For these first three days, all I require of you is to get familiar with each other, as in some cases they are very small classes and you will all be working together for the rest of the year. Also that the Advanced Theory classes begin their reading assignments for the next two weeks, which will be listed below.

I will be accepting new students until end of school (4:30 PM EST) on Friday. Advanced Theory classes are limited to 10 students, Primary and Secondary to 15.

In addition, I would like those in Origins to brainstorm about what they know about the origins of mathematics, in the dimension of their choice, and Literature and Art to start reading the preface and first section of Flatland for our introductory piece of literature in mathematics -- we may or may not continue with this in the future.

COMMENT TO INTRUDUCE SELF: Advanced Theory: Origins

Mac walks into the class and takes a seat. "Hi, I'm Mac," she said with a little wave. "As for math, I guess it originated in accounting and economics. How many sheep do we have and how much can we get for them?"

Mac - you take Classics as well, don't you? There are so many people here that I'm still having trouble placing them sometimes.

"Yep, I'm in Classics, as well. And CompSci and Journalism. Still haven't decided on an extracurricular."

I've Secondary Mathematics, English and Geology, myself. And I've applied to join the science club. Right now, I'm considering trying to get some study groups together - maybe some of us could double up for Classics and Advanced Theory?

Sure, though I heard Simon Tam was running a Classics study group, if you're interested. I was thinking of going.

Thomasina takes a seat at one of the tables that seem to have been reserved for this class, smoothing her skirt over her lap as she adjusts the placement of her chair in relation to the table. She is quite excited about this class, as it looks to cover all the sorts of things her primers never talked about.

Hello, all. My name is Thomasina. And if the way we learn mathematics means anything, then we should assume that its earliest roots can be found in the very basic practice of counting. After all, you can't do anything else mathematically until you've assigned a value to something.

*Laura walks in, takes seat at front of class* "Hi, I'm Laura..." adds confidently "Anyone need a partner?"

We hadn't paired up yet - I believe we were waiting to find out if anyone else was actually enough of a blue-stocking to want to take this.

Thomasina smiles, letting the other girls know that she's including herself in that gentle bit of teasing.

Oh good, hate to be the one left out.

I shouldn't think anyone likes to be left out. Still, there's only the three of us so far. I imagine we can arrange something among us.

I would imagine so. But sounds good to me!

Thomasina smiles again.

I'm ever so glad. I'm finding it all terribly strange here, but ever so interesting as well. I can hardly wait until this class really gets underway!

It's all so overwhelming...I'd hate to see what it would be like if I had more classes. But I do love a challenge!

It certainly is that! But I'm glad for all my classes - they give me something I need to do, keep me from thinking about how all of this can even be possible - yet.

Still, I'm beginning to think that I'll spend my time here on nothing but going to class or doing prep.

Everything's so different from Los Angeles; I never thought there could be a more out there environment or people. I've got all but Tuesday mornings off, so that gives me a chance for sleep-in ~~and study cram~~.

Radek glances nervously around the classroom as he slides into a seat. He cleares his throat and speaks rather quietly. "Hello, I am Radek." He gives a little wave, unsure of what else he should say.

It's a pleasure to meet you, Radek. Don't we also share a Classics lesson?

Mac waves a bit, "Hi, Radek, I remember you from Classics, too. Enjoying school?"

Finishing up a cigarette he strode through the classes doors, looking confident and self-centered as always. "Hello. The name is Sawyer,"--which ofcourse it wasn't legally--", Am from Tennesse. Enjoy booze, smokin' and women." he took a seat near the back.
