Office Hours (01/17/2006)

Jenny sat in her office and combed through attendance records for last week. She was expecting the students who had expressed an interest in Magical Theory as an independent study course to drop by.

OOC: Due to the fact that two of three of those students have access issues today, I expect that this is going to be slowplayed. (Anyone else interested? Stop by.)

After his classes, Bridge stops by Ms. Calendar's office and knocks on the door.

(ooc: yaaaay slowplay. i'll be on and off as i'm supposed to be working on *rl* homework, and then classes)

"Hey," said Jenny. "Door's unlocked, so come on in!"

OOC: Cool, because work is unexpectedly more hectic than I'd anticipated.

Bridge bounces in to the office. "Hi!" he said cheerfully. "Um, I'm here to talk about working on Magical Theory as an Independent Study!"

"You must be Bridge Carson, then," said Jenny, grinning at him. She nodded at a chair. "Have a seat. Grab yourself a cup of coffee if you want some. And then we'll talk."

"Oh! I guess I should have mentioned who I am, huh? Not that it matters since you seem to know anyway..." Bridge grins and bounces over to a chair, grabbing a cup of coffee and putting an unhealthy amount of sugar in it.

"I recognized your voice from the message," said Jenny, watching bemusedly as Bridge added sugar to his coffee. He and Xander could probably compete in the Sugar Olympics. "So, you want to take Magical Theory as an independent study? How come?"

"Oh! Okay, well, see, have you met Zordon yet?" Bridge asks. "'Cause that sort of explains a lot of it."

"Dean Zordon?" asked Jenny. She shook her head. "Nope, haven't had a reason to hit his office yet. So you want to fill the poor, confused teacher in, then?"

"Okay, so, this might sound kinda weird? But maybe not. I dunno. Where I come from, Zordon was responsible for creating the Ranger powers- at least, on Earth- to fight against evil. And they're sort of, like, this blend of magic and technology, and I thought since I'm gonna be a Ranger someday too, taking Magical Theory would help me understand the magic side of things, and how they work together, because I'm already pretty good with technology."

"Well," said Jenny, thanking a couple of deities that she was used to Willow's turbo-babble. "Sounds like a good reason to be taking the class, and you've also got a good focus for it. I'd suggest we see about tailoring the course material to fit what you're looking to do. But the mix of tech and magic?" She grinned. "I'm your friendly neighborhood technopagan, so, hey, looks like you're barking up the right tree."

"Though, gotta ask: What's a Ranger?"

"Dude, awesome," Bridge grins. "And Rangers are, like, the defenders of peace and justice in my universe. They're given powers that allow them to have enhanced strength, reflexes, and healing ability. Plus, they get the latest technology to help them out."

(ooc: and i'm not sure whether i should bring up Bridge's abilities or have the topic come up sometime later, as they're genetic rather than magical in nature.)

"Sounds neat," said Jenny. "~~If slightly cheesy due to different types of film stock and cheap special effects.~~ So where does the magic come in?"

OOC: Well, it's entirely possible that you'd be able to work with Liz Weir on that, as she's coming into the independent study with a focus on magic being passed on genetically. So it depends on if you want to work with her on the IS more, or go it on your own. If you guys work together at all, I'm not going to require that you guys have the same subject matter. More that you guys have the option for the fun roleplay.

"Well, the powers themselves are... as far as I understand it, the transformation from 'normal human' to 'Ranger' is triggered by a device powered by something infused with magical energy- like, a coin or a crystal."

(ooc: oooh, that could work!)

Jenny nodded. "Sounds like a great thing to explore. I was thinking we could have weekly meetings during my office hours and you could apprise me of your progress. Maybe you and Elizabeth could come in at the same time, since it sounds like you'll both have a similar focus?"

OOC: Finally! And we can wrap this up soon if you'll pull it out the add form at the next comment. Then I can sign it, and viola, we're done!

"Awesome, dude!" Bridge says, "Oh! And I guess you gotta sign this thing so I can get the class added to my schedule and all," he adds, pulling out a slightly-rumpled add form.

Jenny grinned. "Not a problem, Bridge. Sounds like we'll have a lot of fun together. I was thinking of meeting during Friday's office hours." She signed the add form for Bridge's Magical Theory independent study and handed it back to him.

"Sweet! Thanks, dude!" Bridge says, and waves goodbye to Ms. Calendar before bouncing off.

Phoebe managed to maneuver her wheelchair into Ms. Calendar's office and she only smacked her leg twice.

"Sorry I'm late..."

"You're not late," said Jenny, with a smile. She wasn't going to ask about the wheelchair. Personal much? "I'm around in my office most of the day on Tuesdays."

"Attacked by demons," Phoebe said softly to the unspoken question. There is fear and shadows in her eyes. "They wanted to kill me because I'm a witch."

"Bummer," said Jenny. "This could be a problem. You report it to Dean Zordon and Principal Smith yet? Not to mention the police?"

Though she was pretty sure that the treating doctors were required to report any instances of injuries resulting from felonies or possible abuse to the authorities. Still, she didn't know the local doctors.

OOC: It's part of Jenny's job--based on my understanding of a school teacher's job--to report any signs of physical abuse to the school administration and the local child protection services. But since we only have school admin IG, I'm giving you fair OOC warning that Jenny is going to be reporting this to Dean Zordon and possibly also Principal Smith tomorrow during their office hours. Sorry, I don't want to mess up your plot, but this is something that I cannot ignore and remain IC.

"Principal Smith is aware of what happened, thank you, Ms. Calendar," Phoebe said with a soft smile.

[[OOC: Principal Smith and Phoebe are already talking. ;) Thank you for the heads-up, but I would totally understand Jenny doing something like that.I do realize that it's very in character for her.]]

Jenny nodded once, then continued on. She didn't need to push someone who was so obviously upset. "Good," said Jenny. "Glad to hear that. Now, let's move on. You're interested in Magical Theory as an independent study, correct?"

Phoebe liked Jenny for not pushing her right now. The attack was still too fresh in her mind.

"Yes, ma'am, I am. I recently found out I was...well, what I am. I believe, as does my sisters and my boyfriend, that I could learn a lot from your class."

"Great," said Jenny. "So do you have a specific focus you wanted to take, or did you just want to cover the standard course material in an independent study format?"

"Protection and defense?" Phoebe asked, looking down at the floor for a moment.

"Ms. Calendar, I almost died Friday night because someone was able to get into my mind and scramble it. Do you know of anything I can do...to at least prevent that amount of damage again?" She swallows. "I wouldn't mind learning what you're teaching the class...but those are three things that are foremost in my mind."

"I'm afraid that's one thing I can't do," said Jenny. "One thing that I promised the administration of this school when I proposed teaching Magical Theory was that I absolutely would not be running a practicum on how to work magic. However, If you're interested in learning the theory behind defensive magic in an independent study format, we can certainly work with that."

Phoebe nodded. "Yes, please, Ms. Calendar. I would like to learn the theories on a lot of how things work in the world of magic. But the theory of defensive magic is definitely number one on my list."

"Sounds like a plan," said Jenny. "Got an add form for me to sign?"

Phoebe handed her the add form.

Jenny signed the add form for Magical Theory, added the 'independent study' note, and, with a smile handed it back to Phoebe.

Her mind racing, Elizabeth knocked on the door to Ms Calendar's office.

"Hello?" asked Jenny.

OOC: Yay!

"Ms Calendar?" Elizabeth opened the door, and adjusted the her bag. "I came to talk to you about the Magical Theory Independant Study?"

[ooc: Finally make it zomg!]

"Hey, Elizabeth," said Jenny, grinning. "Great! We already talked about it, so I got an add form and signed it for you." She held out an add form to Elizabeth. "Though come on and have a seat, and we can talk about it a bit more."

OOC: Today's the add/drop deadline, so I wanted to get the add form link in first.
