Jung: Archetypes, Etc. (Monday, 01/16/2006, 4th Period)

"Hey, guys. Today, we're going to be watching Star Wars IV: A New Hope Space Battles XII: A New Start. It's a pretty good example of The Hero's Journey, one of Jung's archetypal stories. So watch the movie, read the handouts, come up with a good question, and we'll discuss the concept on Thursday.

ETA: The door to the classroom is closed to minimize disturbances from the hallway.

OOC: I've been offline all day due to work issues, and I'm sorry for having posted this so late. And I think we don't have a fake Star Wars title, but if so, someone let me know and I'll correct this.

Rory intently watched the film, taking scrutinous notes. She quickly wrote, "What role does the soulmate play in this film?" and put an asterisk beside it to remind herself to ask about it on Thursday.

She also might have doodled certain initials in the margins. They might have been "RG+AS." Or they might have been "KO+FB." They were scribbled out far too quickly and thoroughly to be deciphered.

"I'm curious about the archetype of incest in such stories. I mean, Luke totally wants in Leia's pants. Why do we have this pairing of a young man and a young woman who are either siblings or like siblings? Incest is a negative thing, obviously, but it's an aspect in a lot of storytelling," Lee says oh-so-innocently.

"It's not that bad," Angel said, offhandedly. Then he seemed to remember he was talking out loud and people could hear him. "Um. I mean... in fiction."

Lee blinks. And doesn't ask. For he really shouldn't, omg.

"What's the big deal with fathers in the journey?" Angel asked. He scoffed. "Believe me, that reconciliation ain't ever going to happen. Give it up and get a hobby, eh guy?"

Broots/Alanna!mun is going crazy at the moment. Broots will comment tomorrow if that's not a problem?

"Hope," Rory shrugged. "Sometimes people are reluctant to give up when they really know they should. Especially on people like, y'know, fathers. Even if said father has turned his back on the hero, or even if he's neglectful and only paid attention when it suited him, maybe the hero still feels that drive to try to connect with his dad."

She might have been getting a bit to into this particular subject.

"Complete waste of time," Angel said. "He's never going to pay attention except to remind you that you're not good enough."

Angel might've been getting a little into the subject too.

"Hey, he might pay attention when it's convenient to say that he's a good daddy. Or when he wants to screw up your mom's life," Rory replied.

Clark watches the film, taking notes, and tries not to shift awkwardly at all the aliens. He scratches down, "are there arechetypes for the roles that Han and Leia play as well as for the Hero?"

*mumbles* I may or may not have only seen Star Wars once, yeaaaars ago, while only half paying attention. Also, I may or may not have a terrible memory of the actual movie. As a result, Clark may or may not have trouble coming up with a valid question.

Ahem.

I lose all my geek cred, don't I?

"I've never had - uh, heard of that being an issue," Angel said. "Maybe it depends on if the hero's a girl or not."
