Anthropology 101, 6th Period

Daniel really isn't looking his best today. He's coughing and sneezing and spluttering and pretty much looks like crap.

He really wishes that today could have been a holiday.

"Okay," he coughs. "Today I want to talk about some major names in physical anthropology."

He turns and writes on the board:

1. The Leakey Family
2. Franz Boaz
3. Pierre Paul Broca

"Now, obviously I'm not in any state to do much talking today, so it's up to you guys. From your reading even thought I've not given you a book list in character zomg, what can you tell me about any of these people. Why are we looking at them? What did they do that makes them part of our lesson?"

After another coughing fit towards the end of the class, he holds up his hand. "I'm going to set homework tonight. Choose any of these guys, and give me a hundred or so words on them. Pretty much what we've been talking about here. In for the next lesson, please."

"Mary Nicol Leakey excavated several fossils of hominid ancestors," Kiki reports, "She unearthed many skeletal remains of proto-humans, some almost 4 million years old, throughout the 1930s through the 1960s, and she found the first skull of a fossil ape ever to be found."

No, her book looks nothing like crib notes from Wikipedia; why do you ask?

"She was in Tanzania," Kiki answers, "and she discovered hominid footprints - three sets, I think - in the hardened ash left by a volcano. But what I think it most interesting is that she was well over 60 years old when she was on this expedition! I think that's really impressive."

"Boaz did pioneering work on race, culture and language. He trained the first generation of American anthropologists including Ruth Benedict, Alfred L. Kroeber, Robert Lowie, Margaret Mead, and Edward Sapir. He also designed the Jesup Expedition as a comprehensive project on the cultures and history of the North Pacific region and focused on the question of human migration from Asia across the Bering Strait."

Han did the reading.

"Did you know that Broca was condemmed as being a subversie figure and a corrupter of youth? Isn't that the coolest?" Blair bounced and checked his notes.

"He's mostly known for his research on different parts of the brain and discovering like localized areas of brain functions. He also started the first anthropological laboratory and published over 200 articles."

Blair leaves after class and then shows up again in a little while carrying a bag.

"Hey, Professor. I had the flu last week and it majorly sucked. Here's some tissues and some chicken soup and a couple of tea packets and cough drops and the funnies from the Sunday paper. Cuz those always help!"

He's not dying. He may think it, but he's male.
