Speech Comm Thursday

201--Speech 2nd period

Let's hear them folks. Wow me. After each speaker, feel free to question them.

So? Sender and receiver. You've all done it, you all get it. Now we get into discussion...and yes, you have to talk. Feel free to question each other, I'm not the only one in here who has a thought in her head. I hope. Ok. Deceptively simple question...

"Hey, I'm Belthazor. Um, I'm a demon. I used to kinda hide that, but, uh, some people found out so I figured what the hell, might as well be upfront about it. I was raised in the Underworld, which is just like it sounds -- underground. The bad sets you see in movies with the rock caverns and the hellish red glow? All true." Bel goes on, just making two minutes, with lots of "ummms" and "uhhhs." He's clearly not comfortable talking in front of a crowd like this.

Barbossa smiled at Bel. "When ye be makin' the crater in the park a month or so back, on a scale o' one t' ten, how humiliatin' was it? Bein' a demon and all?"

Bel twitched at the memory, crumpling the paper in his hand. "At the time? Ten. Now, maybe a five. I don't like losing, but I did the best I could."

Isabel tilted her head and looked at Belthazor. Several times since their conversation last week, she'd thought about how comfortable he was admitting he was a demon. But still, it couldn't have been too easy to admit it. She wondered how people reacted. ~~Not that she every worried she'd have a similar problem in Fandom.~~

"Did people originally think you were human? And if so, how did they react when they found out the truth? ~~Is everyone going to hate me?~~"

"Yeah, everybody thought I was human, I guess," Bel said. "Then somebody got a video tape of me showing off my demon form, and they sent it to everyone in the school to try to smear my name before the student elections. It kinda backfired because nobody really reacted to what I was and got pissed at the person who sent out the tape. It really didn't matter what I was to most people it felt like."

Isabel nodded, it was food for thought.

Phoebe's voice was soft, she wanted to soothe him a little bit.

"With everything that has happened to you here, what gives you the desire to stay instead of saying screw this I'm going to Tahiti?"

"A petite brunette who goes by the name of Phoebe Halliwell," Cole said, grinning at Phoebe.

Barbossa coughed.

Well, it could be a cough.

Could be hiding a snicker.

Kind of hard to tell.

Phoebe blushed and then glared in mock savagery at Barbossa.

Isabel smiled at the sap. She did not snicker like others in the class. If she did, she hid it really well.

Barbossa bounced to the front of the classroom. It was clear he enjoyed this sort of thing.

"I be Barbossa," he said. "I be a sophomore, fifteen years old, as near as can be reckoned, and I be orginally hailin' from the West Indies before comin' t' Fandom High. I were a cabin boy on a few ships o' rather dubious distinction before, um, acquirin' enough money t' be able t' get some book-learnin' at this fine institution." He grinned. "I be originally from the 1750s, near as I can figger, but I be likin' it here much better, even wit' the fire-breathin' ducks and the vampires that be occasionally breakin' into my house. Here I be runnin' a radio station, which ye may be familiar wit'." He winked at Bel. "Back home we be not havin' radio yet. Or indoor plumbin', which be a topic fer another time."

"Do ball point pens confuse you as much as they confused me? Cell phones, I got. Laptop, took a while, but I figured out. Ball points? Bane of my existance."

"Ye be makin' a good point," Barbossa said, furrowing his brow. "I be stickin' wit' quills meself."

"Aside from indoor plumbing and the radio, what's your favorite thing you've found here at Fandom High?" Bel asked.

"Interestin' people," Barbossa said with a grin. "And gremlins, who be makin' sure me broadcasts never be borin'. I'll be sorry t' see 'em go."

"I'm Isabel Evans, a new sophomore here at Fandom. I'm from Roswell, New Mexico and no, I have never seen any aliens. Well, unless you count the stuffed aliens my friend's mother sold in her shop." She couldn't help but smile a bit thinking of Amy Deluca.

"I came to Fandom looking for something different. I've lived in Roswell all my life and I wanted a change. Fandom is definitely that. I've met people here, and seen things that I never thought possible."

The speech might be a bit short, but Isabel is reasonably comfortable speaking. She might need to slow down a bit though.

"What has been the biggest surprise for you here so far?" Bel asked Isabel.

"You mean besides you, the dragon, the vampire, and the people from other planets?" Isabel laughed. "I don't know, maybe it's the fact that everyone just accepts it. I'm not used to that. Roswell was a normal high school. People would give other people grief just for not conforming to what they believed was normal."

"It's all my father's fault, really. He's the one who forgot to tell the king that my twin brother and I were born and what our genders were. He's the one who didn't let my brother or I practice our Gift, which is my world's equivolent of magic. He's the one who let Coram and Maude raise Thom and I while he lived with his books. He's the one who accidentally reffered to Thom as Alan sometimes. He's the one who didn't notice that Thom could copy his handwriting. All of these things, plus the fact that I wanted to be a Knight and Thom a Sorcerer, lead to me disguise myself as a boy and train to be a knight. Really, it's all his fault. I'm Alanna Trebond, Junior. Squire Alan of Trebond on the school's official records." Alanna managed a smile through the speech, though someone looking closely would notice that her hands where shacking.

"Do you wish you'd been born a boy, or do you like the challenge of taking on a masculine role as a woman from your world?" Bel asked.

Alanna pondered that. "Usually, I'm happy being being a girl. I'd imagine my life would have been a lot easier if I was a boy, but then, more boring."

"My name is Phoebe Halliwell. I'm the second youngest of four sisters. I'm from San Francisco and I'm being raised by our Grams. I'm learning a lot more at this school than I ever thought I would. I've come to accept that no matter what I expect from the world around me, I am always going to be surprised by something, no matter what. ~~I'm also one of the Charmed Ones whose soulmate is a demon~~."

Phoebe shook her head and ran a frustrated hand through her hair. She was so not good about talking about herself. She was going to flunk this class.

"What do you consider to be the best lesson you've learned here?" Cole asked.

"That ~~bad boys named Cole Turner will always surprise you with how good his hands are~~ there are bites that can be much more interesting than rabies?"
