Sociology of Violence: 2nd Period

"Welcome class. I'd like to make a quick announcement. Veronica Mars will be my TA for this class. If you need anything from the lab and can not locate me, she will be able to assist you, and she will also be helping me with various class endeavors. Please treat her with the respect you have all shown me, so far. Thank you."

"I asked you Monday to find a definition of violence. I think in your research you may have found that it isn't as easy of an assignment as you may have first thought. It's something that can be easily debated, and legal definitions often do not match those of our personal beliefs.

Therefore, I'd like you to each share your definition. I'd also like you to comment on one other classmate's definition, and how you feel it is correct, or maybe incorrect, as the case may be.

Homework: Read this chapter titled Gender and Interpersonal Violence from Understanding and Preventing Violence, Volume 3: Social Influences. It's only 83 pages, you should have no problems finishing that by Monday.

Sociology of the Paranormal: 6th Period

"Welcome, class. I'd like to introduce your new TA for this course, Belthazor. Please give him the same level of respect I have come to expect from all of you, and he will be ~~ruling with said iron fist~~ assisting me, and you, as needed all semester long. Lyta will also be a general TA. Thank you both, for applying."

Grissom then launches into a long-ass lecture on Skepticism ~~but the word Matrix is strangely subbed with Grid. Odd.~~

"Okay, after that torment, let's keep discussion light today. I'm sure all of you, in one form or another, have been exposed to groups of skeptics, and groups of believers.

So, which do you identify with more, and why? ~~Because I blame it on brain chemistry~~."

Homework: Read Wonder and Skepticism by Carl Sagan for Monday.

Maia signed in, she was exhausted and looked every bit like a person who had not slept in days. Before Grissom got started she just laid her head on the desk and didn't speak to anyone.

When Phoebe entered the class, she headed straight to Maia's side. She signed in first, and then took a seat next to her. She left a book on a desk for Cole to join her.

Maia turned her head and looked at Phoebe. "Hey." She said, her eyes still holding a haunted look.

"Hey sweetheart."

Maia smiled softly at her. "Where's Bel?" Maia knew she was safe but for some reason and she felt stupid for thinking it, she would like it if Belthazor was in the room with them.

"He'll be here soon, I promise."

Maia gave a small smile of relief and swallowed hard. Glancing up she saw the security cameras. Before she had told she didn't really realize how unsafe she felt, now that she had told, she realized just how much she really had been.

Cole signed in, took attendence for Dr. Grissom, then settled in a seat by Phoebe. "Hey, sweetheart," he said. "Is something wrong? You look kinda upset."

Phoebe smiled at him and then looked back at Maia.

"See, he's here, now. You're safe."

"What's wrong? What's going on?" Cole asked, looking over at Maia.

Cole has never seen Phoebe this angry.

"Something happened and she needs to feel safe. I told her you would be here soon."

"Well, yeah, nobody's going to mess with me. What happened?" Cole said, puzzled and a little worried now.

Phoebe looked at Maia. "You want to tell him or shall i?"

"Tell me what?"

Maia couldn't meet Bel's eyes. "You-you can." She whispered staring down at her hands.

"Will someone just tell me what's going on?" Cole said. "Is someone hurt or something?"

Maia glanced at Phoebe and then she stared back down at her hands "Sawyer hit me, at the New Years Eve Ball." Maia said finally.

"...he hit you? Why?" Bel said quietly.

Maia swallowed hard "Paige kissed me and he saw her. She said it was Crowley's fault the way she was acting." Maia shivered slightly, her hands were trembling. "He backhanded me across the face."

"For kissing Paige?" Bel was still processing this. "Did he hurt you?"

"Nearly broke my jaw." Maia whispered her voice was tight. "It knocked me to the ground."

Bel blinked. Shook his head. "Then why," he asked slowly, "were you skinny dipping with him last night? I don't get it."

Maia stared at the desktop again "I went skinny dipping with my friends, he just tagged along with the group." She said her voice quiet, she didn't know why she had done it, what made her think it was ok. She was ashamed about it now and the longer time went by the more ill over it she was feeling. "Nobody knew except Lana, what had happened I didn't-" Maia frowned close to tears "I didn't tell anyone." Maia wanted to disappear, she had thought if she didn't tell anyone it was just go away. That maybe she could convince herself that it didn't really happen but it had happened and now everyone knew about it.

"Okay, let me get this straight," Bel said. "You and Paige kissed. Sawyer hit you and almost broke your jaw, then a week and a half later you go swimming with him." He looked at Phoebe and bit back any sarcasm or apathy. That would just upset her and they'd already fought enough that week. Phoebe wanted strength and protection right now.

He sighed and shook his head. "Maia, you need to see a counselor. Like...right now. Your behavior isn't making any sense and is just going to get your hurt again. And Sawyer needs a taste of his own medicine, which I'm more than happy to give him. Him hurting you has upset Phoebe. Him hurting you means he may hurt Paige. If he lays a hand on either of you -- or any other girl in this school -- I'll send him screaming to hell." The words sounded so strange coming out of his mouth, when he was a killer of witches.

Phoebe looked at Cole with a thankful smile and then looked back at Maia.

"There is nothing for you to be ashamed of, Maia. You're safe." She strokes her hair. "You're safe. We won't let anything happen to you."
