Journalistic Integrity (Wednesday, January 11 - 6th period)
“Hello, duckies,” Rita smiled. “Sign in and take a handout as you enter.”
On the corner of the desk rested a small pile of what might appear to be very old paper, a slender piece of wood and an acid green feather.
"All right, boys and girls. This is Journalistic Integrity. This is where we’ll find out how far is too far. How much do people have a right to know?”
She folded her hands behind her back, tilting her head.
"We all have secrets that we’d prefer not to get out. But if someone is in the spotlight, do they still have a right to that secrecy? Does the public have a right to know the private affairs of their leaders?
These are the concepts we’ll cover this term. But for today, I want to learn about you. Introduce yourself, say your age and where you’re from, what you want to be when you grow up, and something that makes you absolutely unique. Something you’re good at, or that makes you distinctive. Perhaps, even - think of a quality that might make some consider you a celebrity? Why would someone want to write about you?”
“I’ll go first. I’m Rita Skeeter. You may call me Professor or Ms. Skeeter. I’m thirty-six, most lately of London. I’m a rather well-known journalist,” she laughed, “though I naturally wouldn’t expect many of you to know my work. Muggles usually don’t, unless they’ve been snooping where they oughtn’t - and I would highly encourage that, by the way. And as for my uniqueness...I can and will turn you all into toadstools if you misbehave in my class.”
She quirked her brows and smiled expectantly.
