Journalism 101/201 (Wednesday, January 11 - 5th period)

“Good afternoon, children,” Rita said with a smile, watching the students file in. “I’m Professor Rita Skeeter. Please sign in as you enter, and take a handout."

On the corner of the desk rested a small pile of what might appear to be very old paper, a slender piece of wood and an acid green feather.

"So. You all want to be little reporters. How absolutely darling."

Her smile widened. It was an itty-bitty bit scary.

She perched on the desk, crossing her legs and smoothing her rather tight skirt. "Since I’m absolutely thrilled to have you all in my class, I want to learn about you. Introduce yourself, say your age and where you’re from, what you want to be when you grow up, and something that makes you absolutely unique. Why are you special?

“I’ll go first. I’m Rita Skeeter. You may call me Professor or Ms. Skeeter. I’m thirty-six, most lately of London. I’m a rather well-known journalist,” she laughed, “though I naturally wouldn’t expect many of you to know my work. Muggles often don’t. And as for my uniqueness...well, I grade your papers, and I won’t hesitate to use highly creative measures to enforce in my classroom. I doubt any other teachers have the capability or willingness to jinx naughty boys and girls.”

She tilted her head expectantly, seeming to wait for someone to volunteer.

"I'm Peter Parker, age fifteen, from New York, New York. I'm not really sure what I'd like to do when I grow up other than continue to live. I think that's an important goal." Peter thought about the final part of the introduction for a moment, then continued, "And a unique thing about me is that I spent several months working for the Daily Bugle newspaper in New York. I maintained the website without gaining any real newspaper experience and signed up for this class anyway."

Peter gave a friendly nod of the head back to his Big Brother.

Either this professor knew something or was terribly out-of-touch with technology. "Err, no. It's a location on the internet. It's a computer network where you can access information from all over the world. I was in charge of getting the stuff from the print version of the paper onto the internet."

"I'm... sorry?" Peter said, having no clue how to respond to such criticism. "But it shows how we can adapt even without magic, right? That has to count for something."

Huh. Peter didn't think anyone could be as patronizing as Mr. Jameson, but she came close. Oh well, the path of least resistence was probably best on the first day. "I could help you with that if you'd like," Peter said, not actually meaning to sound like he was sucking up.

Maybe his second impression was wrong. "Just let me know whenever, Professor," Peter said, pleased. It was nice to be mistaken about people sometimes.
